1986 K30 - Rapid Learning

Get 'er cleaned up and solid.
I got (basically) everything replaced between the clutch pedal and the transmission!
  • New clutch master cylinder
  • New hydraulic line
  • New slave cylinder
Bleeding the new stuff was kind of a pain, but I compressed the new slave cylinder using zip ties and that helped a lot.

Now that I am done, I have a couple of questions...
  1. The truck wouldn't start after I did the job because of the neutral start switch. I added a few zip ties onto the switch so that I could artificially shorten the "stroke", and it started up after that. I don't know what would cause the pedal travel to change and am a little confused by that. Maybe the new master cylinder has a longer actuator arm thing that connects to the clutch pedal?

  2. Once I got the truck fired up, I test drove it and everything felt good. That being said, I recorded a video of the slave cylinder pushing out and it doesn't look like it is extending all of the way. I could shift through the gears just fine, so maybe it doesn't matter. What do you guys think?
Pics and video from the job are below!

You should be able to adjust the clutch pedal switch, just like the brake switch

Man, I haven't updated this thread in a long time. I finally popped the inspection cover off so that I could look at the ring gear. It is definitely marred to say the least. Even with the inspection cover off, it was hard to see much. Ultimately it looks like the pinion gear on the starter motor isn't "penetrating" into the ring gear teeth. The ring gear teeth are heavily worn toward the direction of the motor.

I'll include some pics, hopefully you all can see. I am guessing that the right thing to do here is to pull the ring gear and to get a new starter. Just start fresh with both of them. I want to get one of those PowerMaster mini starters anyhow.

Yikes that ring gear is gnarled up for sure. The biggest issue with your plan to replace the ring gear is you need to pull the trans out to get to it. Between the heavy 205 and the even heavier 465 it’s not a fun one.

When/if you are ready to go down that path I’d invest in a fresh clutch and t/o bearing. It’s totally a you are there MAW kind of deal.

The machine shop that surfaced your flywheel could pull the ring gear and turn it around for you so the good side is facing the trans.

Of course that adds some cost to the equation but again if you have to pull the trans if it was mine I’d do the clutch as I hate doing that job more than I have too. A standard LUK clutch at any local Napa is totally up to the task and won’t set you back a ton of money.

Just my two Pennies dude.

As far as I know, the ring gear is not cut the same on both sides. There is a taper cut on the starter side while the back is flat cut. This allows for the starter drive to drop in with more success and less grinding. It matches the tapered cut on the starter drive gear.
A new ring gear or flywheel is the way from my experience.

A few friends came by yesterday afternoon for pizza and beer and helped me get the shell back onto the truck.

It was wayyyy lighter than I remembered. I asked three friends to come by so that we'd have four guys lifting. Definitely didn't need all that but it was a good excuse to hang out and eat pizza and drink beer.

Now it's time to get cracking!! Going to swing by HF and get a transmission jack and am going to start taking stuff off. I'm really motivated to get after this job and to get it done quickly. I'd hate for another camping season to come and go where I'm not using this damn truck.

I'll pull the Blazer into the extra bay soon and will get after the ignition module. Just want to do some last-minute EGR fussing first.

I finally got going on the K30 ring gear tonight. I was so scared to start this job that it took me nine months to get going. :frown1:

For the most part, I am just following the Haynes manual. Disconnected the speedo cable and an electrical switch off the top of the t-case. Drained it. Removed the rear driveshaft. It isn't much, but at least I have started.

maybe see if someone has floor trans jack you could borrow. that will allow you to pull trans and t case together. Anyone in Co have one ?

I picked up a transmission jack from HF. It's sitting in the cab waiting to be used.

I didn't consider pulling the transmission and transfer case together, I thought I would just do them one at a time.

Either way I am okay with taking my time and learning. It will be great for this thing to have a reliable starter/ring gear setup when I am done.

I am so frustrated with myself for dragging my feet on this thing. I spend so much time surfing Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace looking at K30s. Why? I have one in my garage that is f***ing badass that is just waiting for me to get going.

The work ahead scares me because it's a big job and I'm afraid of messing something up. That is dumb. I need to just GO!!!

Sorry for the useless post. Just trying to make myself more accountable to make progress on this truck. It is the coolest vehicle I own and I've driven it < 1000 miles since I bought it in 2020.

You get to it when you get to it, it's the way it is. :dunno:

Most, if not all active members on this site do this, it's normal.

Nothing to it but to do it! :waytogo:

Not worthless though, your thread post whatever you want.

And again, many of us can probably relate with what your going through.

Keep your head up :D

I get so frustrated with myself because I have all of these grand ideas and no $$. LOL. When I get a little $$ it always seems like i have to fix something instead of upgrading/building.

Just keep pushing forward!

like was said; we all do it. I look at Dodge diesels even though I already have 2; I also look for Chevy 6.0 for yet another tow rig.
I just got done looking at rock crawlers even though I have 3 tube buggies, 4 Jeeps and 3 K5s (and I am wanting to sell 2 buggies, 2 Jeeps, and 2 K5s)
as well as looking at trailers; even though I have 1

I think it is just human nature and sometimes I will stop myself and ask why I am looking if I am trying to sell; never know, may miss the deal of a lifetime :pimp1:

It's all nuts and bolts the hardest part will aligning the clutch disc, and stabbing the trans. Are you having a machine shop swap the ring on the fly wheel, or are you gonna try it yourself ? If you wanna try it yourself, we can go over the steps before you try. You'll need a torch, I think map gas might do it. I have always used acetylene.

Which HF jack did you get? use a ratchet strap and some wood blocks to keep the trans locked down on jack table.

I’ve already got two project vehicles and I’m heading up to OK in two weeks to grab a third. Why? Because my other project vehicles run and apparently that means I need a non running one.

Totally agree with this post. I’m still lacking ac in my K5 for this reason. I save up and before I pull the trigger something more pressing comes up.

To Drew’s point being frustrated you haven’t done much to the K30. That’s life. I had not driven my TBSS since June of last year to a couple of weeks ago. The new job was a big reason why, but I also had other things to drive when I did get home. Thought about it and made a more conscious effort to get it out a little more often.

As far as the surfing marketplace goes. We all do it. Do we need anything else? Not really but you never know what you find. If you need to Jedi mind trick yourself, you are just checking values. Not looking to buy.

Actually working on the K30 is pretty simple. Changing a clutch/flywheel is not a hard job. Is challenging because 465’s and 205’s are heavy and a challenge to lower and lift under a truck without the right stuff. With a harbor freight trans jack it gets a whole lot simpler.

Let me know if you want some help. Most weekends I’m home and goofing off.

That's where I am.
I have 15 projects and I am trying to sell some and yet I am browsing when I need a mental break.
It helps me stay up to date on prices and if there is a great deal and I can't buy it, I have friends...
I am still trying to fix things in between jobs so I can get some inventory cleared
