1986 m1008 - CUCV

I know it was true of the blazers, not sure with the pickups, but they all use the same ignition key. So anyone with a CUCV key can use your CUCV.
That is true of all GM squarebody based CUCVs. One key for a million doors and ignition switches... you don't want to worry about which key fits which truck if you are under fire.

Yeah, and you'd better pray that 6.2 fires up !...if its cold out you might be boned..

They're bad ass! Doesn't take much to get them running great if they are not already. Winter starts will be fine as long as the glow plug controller is working properly, or better yet just bypass and run the glow plugs manually.

I don't know where the glow plug relay is located, but there appears to be a new-ish looking solenoid/ relay near the hydroboost unit on the firewall.

That is it
WHat is that thing on the firewall, passenger side, that has a tin cover held on with wire bails?

Fuel filter. If you have issues with it like a cracked base, they can be switched out for the spin on type found in the earlier trucks
The only other thing that ever got me about the CUCV was the black out lights. Gotta have the 2 switches in the right position or you may have NO lights, as in no turn signals or brake lights.

Also I know it was true of the blazers, not sure with the pickups, but they all use the same ignition key. So anyone with a CUCV key can use your CUCV.
This got me too. The day I bought my truck, I thought all the lights failed. Took me a long time to realize it was those switches, lol.

And yes, all CUCV use the same key for the doors and ignition. Unless they have been changed out

Look up my thread from 10-13 years ago about Big Ugly, my M1008.
Basically it’s a diesel noob learning about his M1008 while putting way too big of tires on it.

Random thoughts:
M1008 will have 208, M1028 will be 205.

Don’t go with HMMWV tires. 16.5’s kinda suck and the bias ply 36’s are lumpy and the 37” MT’s are lame. The BFG Baja’s are old now. Really, most of these on the market are also very old. Dating from orders for the Iraq/Afghanistan surge of 2007 or so.
Meanwhile you have perfectly good 16” wheels.

I had the 36” bias plies that were lumpy as **** and not quite tall enough. I dumbly went to a 38” tire that dropped my rpm’s but were so heavy it worked harder to move.
If I did it again I’d go with a narrow/tall tire in a 35-37” height and call it good. 9.00-16, 35x10.5R16, 36.12.5R16 TSL, something like that.
Now there’s some decent options for 18’s like 285/75R18’s. Find a set of GM 2500HD 18’s and run those.

I actually made a little power by putting some straight through mufflers (there were some Cherry Bombs that were a literal bolt in replacement) on and fabbing up a cold air duct to the factory spot in the core support. The knock out is even still there on the CUCV’s.
Nothing like a turbo but it helped it breathe and fart better. Held grades better and responded better for about $100 invested.

That said...the 6.2 isn’t a bad motor but it’s a dinosaur. Parts are harder and harder to get. CDR valves are unobtainium now. You can adapt 6.5 parts but even most of those are getting 15+ years out of production.
If I was to ever get one again I’d run it until the engine croaked. To me, even a 350 TBI is a better motor now. Diesel is expensive to operate and run and this is a 13mpg truck at best, not some 20mpg Cummins or 7.3L that also has twice the power.

How to convert to 12v. file:///C:/Users/Owner/Downloads/nn10(1).pdf Steel Soldiers has all the tech manuals to download for free.

First things first ( after replacing the front parking light sockets and getting all the lights working). Needed a place to mount the license plate! A quick scan on Craigs list netted this sorta OK headache rack.

I ordered a set or 285/75R16's and a set of 16X8 white spokes. It's just a work truck.;)

One hundred miles in a cucv on stock tires. I'd rather die than hear that lol
