I just got a quote to paint my 1987 GMC Jimmy Sierra Classic
the quote was to stripe all the paint off fix some minor rust and repaint a single color and clear coat the whole truck. The quote is a little higher than I thought but i wanted to see what everyone else thought. $4500 is what he told me the guy does very very good work and is a good friend of mine. I had some minor work done by him and was very happy with what he did. Have seen other work from his shop and its great . Just never had a whole car painted and didnt know if this was reasonable or not?

Thanks in advance guys

labor + labor = lots of cash.

and fyi base/clear = cash

price out single stage non clear coat. lot better price.

Define whats reasonable for you. Is this a dry weather only, street driven, numbers matching restored beauty queen? Daily beater? or do you like to bash it into things? You've personally seen his work so you know the results, how much is a nice paint job worth to you? 4500 bucks is more than most of these trucks go for :eek1:

Im about to roll on some rustoleum paint, total should be less than $80. Not a show finish, but could be if I put the time into sanding it. Its mostly just so all my body panels match in color. An expensive paint job is just one more thing to worry about all the time.

This is going to be a dry weather only car I live in NY and this is going to be my summer vehicle
It has only 88000 miles on it... it came from PA so there is no rust on the frame and very minimal on the body...
I have already dumped almost 8K into the truck with buying it $2500 and adding a 4 inch lift, a dual exhaust , new bumper, new 2 inch cowl induction hood, new grill, new 15 inch rims, and 35 tires , a little engine work...ect ect
I plan on keeping this forever i am not a beater of cars at all.. I plan on taking this on trails maybe every blue moon and im sure if i get a little mud on it i will take it stright to be washed :) .... I was just wondering if $4500 is a good price for what I am asking him to do

So to answer that question, if its worth it to you, that is what matters.
Take the same basic work description to other reputable shops and have them estimate in the same description of work to be done. You'll get your answer then.
Your paying mostly for his experience and expertise of the work to be done. Its as simple as that.

$4500 is nothing if its truly a quality paint job with prep, stripping the truck, and proper rust fix is DIRT cheap.

Honestly I work in a resto shop and true quality two stage paint jobs start at 10 grand.

You have to remember you gotta remove all the trim, shoot the jams which can involve removing some interior pieces/door panels, then you have to scuff/clean the entire car, shoot it into primer, block out and unstraight panels, then wet sand out the car, then shoot 2-3 coats of base then 2-4 coats of clear. Then the car needs to dry for a couple days and be wet sanded and then buffed out in 3 stages. That doesnt even include and rust repairs.

If thats the quality paint job you're getting for $4500 with rust repair AND the guys stripping the rust so you have no ****ty old paint foundation then its a steal.

Infact I bet we'd get nearly $4500 in labor to completely strip a car for paint if it was necessary.

thank you guys so much for the responses
I am going to do it since i have so much invested already and its going to be a life long love :)
He did tell me that if it was anyone else it would have been at least 8K but i just wanted to see if that sounded right
I know its alot of work and he told me it will take him 3 weeks to a month to get done so I have tentatively scheduled it for April 1st of next year
I figure i can get everything perfect before the paint job
thanks again

I agree with Stomis, a good quality strip down and repaint with 2 stage its usually at least 10k! What kind of "minor rust reapair" is required? That can drive the cost of quickly as well.

very minor surface rust not many spots at all maybe 5 quarter size spots that are not deep

I would just do it yourself....theres lots of great body guys that can guide you thru

I got a quote from Maaco last fall to do about the same type of work and a few rust repairs/dent repairs. Paint layer and then clearcoat for $4,308. I would supply the patch panels for this price. I would also find a rust-free tailgate and rust-free front fenders before bringing it to him, too.

I also talked to another shop about just doing some of the rust repair. To get the rear tailpan and floor replaced would be close to $2,000. I don't think Maaco paid close attention to the rear floorpan issue in their quote so I would expect theirs to be a "little light" on the number.

Expensive no doubt! For my $3,500 truck, I'm now at $11,000.......and no paint job yet!

I'll keep this truck forever too. Sentemental value so a decent paint job is important. :waytogo:

Nothing against cool painted balazers or trucks, but IMO a Damn nice paint job needs to be on something that doesn't go off road.

What these trucks have is character with a little rust and faded paint. And your telling me it doesn't have any rust, just a few small spots?

If your looking to restore something buy a chevelle or a cool muscle car, where you may get your money back someday.

I'm not bashing you and please dont take it that way, regardless do whatever you want, I'm sure it will be nice when done, ad ill probably enjoy looking at it

$4500 sounds like a good price for what was quoted, and if you're experienced with his quality of work.

I agree with getting other quotes, it'll let you know where you stand. Also, ask him if stripping the paint yourself would lower the price. Shooting paint is the fun part, stripping not so much. :) Even if you only did the big easy flat spots and left the jams and stuff for him to do. It's still less time for him.

IMO, not having a solid paint job is throwing your vehicle away. You need something on there to protect it. I suppose in the desert it's optional, but I don't know much about that. From my experience in the rust belt, I think it's better to do 2 or 3 cheap paint jobs over the years than dump several grand into one awesome one. Having rust take hold somewhere is a fact of life and doing paint periodically lets you deal with it. IMO, a killer paint job is ruined once you get a few bubbles. Plus, it's normal to change things on the rig over the years, so it's likely that something will need paint again later.

I think a real paint job can be had for $2k if you shop around and do some of the work. The materials for decent paint will run about $1k (Really good paint costs more). Another $1k gets you about 1/2 week of labor. That's enough to do just final prep, mask and spray. Anyone who has done body and paint work understands why it costs so much. Plus, they are experienced. So when they charge you $500 for dent/rust repair, that means it will take them like 8 hours. Now for the home body-man, that's probably more like 20 hours of labor to get it right.

If you fix the rust spots yourself, be warned that everything looks great in primer, but getting it really straight takes some experience. I would contact the body shop first to discuss what they will use to paint with and get them to agree about what products you will be using.

sounds like a decent price for the work. Thats what I paid (total being in the body shop twice). My truck came out great so no complaints.

Let's see before and after pics...... I have an old ford that I need to paint cheap..... have been thinking about rolling bedliner over the entire truck to hide all of the rust.....:D

Broken record but sounds like a decent price if they're doing a good job and know what they are getting in to. I'd make SURE they knew of the issues with that particular truck, trucks like it, and looked it over thoroughly. These things can hide rust very effectively. Just found some on mine that will eventually have to be fixed.:(

I forget the name but a member on here sprayed Rustoleum on his Burb this past winter and it came out pretty nice, even considering he stated he didn't do things correctly and didn't care about the finish too much.

I like how the Rustoleum jobs look like the old lacquer paint jobs of yore.

I just had my 74 painted. They fixed a 1 minor rust spot about a 4"x4" fixed some dings and painted it with a base clear mix. $1300. All of my friends that are car people thought it was a steal. Very smooth paint, no Maco job here.

Will do! You could get a show finish with a mirror reflection if you wetsand between coats then polish the final one, but im doing none of that. :D Just trying to get the hood, body, and tailgate to be the same color. Im doing minimal prep and sanding, rolling it on over the dents since its probably gonna get scratched to hell again on the trails. Rustoluem paint doesnt fade and is extremely scratch/chip resistant.
