1987 V10 K5 Blazer

Rusty, just the way I like them.
I saw this crusty beauty listed on Facebook awhile back.

He changed the ad, it originally claimed to have an LT1.

Here is the picture that intrigued me.

Clearly either an LB9 or L98, not an LT1. That being said, I love TPI, so I was very interested.

Well after quite a few failed attempts to look at it, or buy it, today finally worked to go see it (although I had no one to go with me so I could drive it home). I drove up there, saw it was a bigger POS than I thought it was, and then fell in love anyway.

It needed a battery, so I had taken the one out of my ‘75 K5 a week ago when I tried to go buy it with my wife, so I could drive it home. We made it to Norfolk that day (a little over half way there), and could not get a response back from him. We did some shopping and ate a late lunch, and just when were going to head home because I had to work, he called me back. He then informs me that he had lost the keys, so it would not start. Told me it said so in the ad. It did not......

I told him that I wished he had told me that beforehand as I would have brought tools and my steering wheel puller, to remove the key switch.

Fast forward to yesterday morning, I call him, and he says he has someone coming to buy it, but that he had a mechanic come and remove the wheel, and pull out the key switch (what a brilliant idea!). He told me if they backed out, he would call me. I waited around all day, no call.

Called him this morning just to confirm it had sold. He says no, and wonders why I didn’t come yesterday to look at it.........

Anyhow, I went up there today, alone, and looked it over.

It is rough, and dirty, and the interior is full of snow because the back window was down about an inch, and the passenger side vent window is broken out. I tried rolling the back window up after I installed my battery. It won’t go up, but it did go down a little more. He said it was also out of gas, so I brought five gallons with me. Poured the gas in, and it cranked, but would not fire.

He then remembers that the fuel pump is on a toggle switch. That might be why the other prospective buyer could not get it to start.....

Got it running, but no reverse. Has weak forward. I drive it a couple blocks away to a Dollar General and buy two quarts of ATF.

I add the two quarts, still not on the dipstick. Buy two more quarts, and that tops it off.

Unfortunately it has RPO GU4, I was hoping for 3.42 or 3.73.

I am hoping it is a complete L98 out of whatever IROC-Z28 or Z28 the previous owner pulled this rear bumper badge off of. Could just be the TPI on top of the LO5.

It does have the L98 valve covers.

Tomorrow I am going to get a ride up there, and try and drive it home. I grabbed an ignition switch for it today.

Cool! Love that paint scheme too. The engine is intriguing!?

Funny with the trans fluid, I got two rigs for free because the PO thought the trans was shot! :haha: Check the dipstick after I haul them home and have a good day!

Your story explains why he never messaged or called me back

As I have the greatest luck of all time, I returned the next day with a ride from a couple of buddies.

No start.

No tools.

No spark.

Life got busy. Went back today and winched it on a different buddy’s trailer. Headed home now.

As it turns out, in hindsight, I wouldn’t have bought it if I knew I was going to finally break down and let my wife buy a new(er) Suburban.

Alas, I already paid the old timer, and I wasn’t going to back out on a deal.
