No VATS that I know of. It's an 88 and I think VATS wasn't implemented until 89 or 90. There's no security chip on the ignition key.

This may have been the problem! I wiggled em around yesterday and thumped on a few pieces under the dash and so far no light.
Of course now that I’ve written this it’ll probably start again…….
if that's the case you're gonna need to climb under there and find the short... But at least you know where to look.
