I picked up a spotless 70k mile rolling chasssis 1988 k5 today in Anniston alabama to replace the 1986 i rolled last august. the 88 was fuel injected whereas my 86 was carbed. im fairly sure that the previous owner took the fuel injectio stuff out. id like to have fuel injection as i plan to daily drive it. what all does a 1988 fuel injection system need. intake throttle body fuel pump in the tank? 02 sensor and a computer?

It was a pretty major changeover from carb to TBI, but since this is an 88, the real question is what was done to go carb? It may have the TBI tank in it, for example and the TBI pump may still be in there. He probably didn't swap all of the earlier emissions hoses and accessories on there, etc. You'll have to see it before you know. So this could be a lot easier than the typical conversion.

Why are you fairly sure it was carbed? Any pictures?

ill get pictures. and the PO told me he switched it over to carb because "edelbrocks are just cool man".... im gonna throw my 86s tank in the 88 to fix the intank pump problem and just run a carb for now i guess. i hate that some bama hillbilly went all wire dike crazy and hacked up a good wiring harness in a truck. Im tired of the carb and a tbi would make it a little more cold weather friendly to drive

ok so update time. I got the carb on and my motor in with the mechanical fuel pump and the carb fuel tank from my 86. whats everyones reccomendations for fuel lines so everything hooks up? the tbi soft lines wont work with the mechanical pump and carb tank fitting wise

Well first things first, I'd refrain from cutting ANY of the TBI lines, as finding good ones later is going to be a bear.

How much time are you talking before you go injection? I despise hose, but for a temporary solution, properly rated fuel hose, properly secured, would probably be ok. At least some new vehicles use plastic line, so who am I to second guess plastic/rubber hose?

Does the motor have a fuel pump cam lobe, assuming this is still the TBI motor? That could be another challenge. But assuming it's easily set up with a mechanical fuel pump, I'd run it essentially like stock, with a return-line fuel pump, just in rubber.

Additionally, other than wiring, you are pretty close to injection otherwise, I would keep my eyes open for a beat up '87-91 that is intact injection-wise, and just strip the parts the PO removed/ruined from yours. The factory fuel line connections suck to deal with, but since you already have the fuel lines, you are far better off leaving them there, and sticking with the factory TBI sending unit, throttle body connections, etc. which you already have.

the computer and most of the wiring was cut out because the in tank pump went out and he didn't want to fix it. the current motor is my 70s era 350 so its good to go as far as the cam lobe. I had it setup in my 86 and running already just wrecked the 86 and went to the 88 body
