1989 gmc jimmy not getting spark

I think it's something stupid simple, that's being overlooked.
Lord knows I've been there.

Ignition is a simple system.
Go back through each step.

I still believe it's the ICM.
Is the Dizzy you put in BRAND NEW.>?

Even then, I'd have the ICM actually tested.
Bad luck, is bad luck. ;)

Could be as small as the ICM checks out, but the wires to it are loose/worn/shot.

There's an idea.
Check the wires from/to the ICM for continuity.

Couldn't hurt.
 
If the chain skipped a tooth or 2 the timing could be off and it won't start. __________________


I am begging you to check the cam timing.....

You changed out the distributor so you must have set it on top dead center by the mark on the balancer but you need to check the valve timing as well.

It is REAL EASY to install the distributor 180 degrees out of time.......

i can see that it wouldnt start if timming was off but wouldnt i still get spark coming out the cap

yep new dist was installed with new icm and i also used one out my buddys truck that we no works cause his truck started back up after we installed it

I tried......

IF THE CHAIN OR SPROCKET IS MESSED UP THEN IT COULD INTERMITANTLY MAKE SPARK.

You did say that you were able to get spark on some of your tests and not able on other tests.

I am not saying that you have definitely got a problem with the timing chain but if you would check it, it would prove or disprove SO many things.

no spark was when we took out spark plug and conected to plug wire then place against a ground bolt did not spark that was the first test we did but we recently had gotten a spark tester which we grounded it to a jumper cable then to negative on battery then we were able to get spark then off coil but not of distributor when we put tester on it

timeing chain is fine no play top dead center lines up rotor spins timing chain HAS BEEN CHECKED

You have checked the output at the coil and it's good, but not good out of your dizzy, which means your problem is at the dizzy, either it's bad, the ICM is bad or what is turning it is bad.
If I had time I would drive down and help you with it.
 
this topic for my buddys 89 jimmy i have a 90
his still not running
coil spark check
fuel pump and relay check
dist, pick up coil, check icm new check
cap rotor new check
wires and plugs new check
fues check
grounds check
timming chain check
anything else we should check
 
OK how much does he want to sell it for?:D
Sorry man but I am out of ideas, unless something you checked wasn't checked properly I can't add anything here.
