1989 Toyota 4Runner

Building the truck my friend won’t be able to
Ordered a new brake booster and master cylinder. Truck was built 10/88 so ordered the appropriate parts from Rockauto. Get them in and they are very different from the original parts. Did I receive the wrong parts or does my truck have a combination of pre 4/89 and post 4/89 parts on it?IMG_1172.jpeg72022623379__6798B2A0-ABA6-4ACD-8F1D-7C30DA354B49.jpeg

Is it built in America or Japan ? Not sure if they did that back then but they have known to be different.

I would look at the 88 parts and compare. 10/88 may still be a parts 88

Unsure on assembly location. And that’s my thinking is I’ve got a mismatch of parts. The booster doesn’t bother me but the master is a pain.

Iirc, all of the “square body” trucks and 4Runners were Japan built, American built trucks didn’t start until the next body style (which started in 89 but, like GM, had carryovers in the 4Runners).

Regardless, check the VIN - if it begins with a “J” it’s Japan built, if it begins with a “4” it’s American built.

John correct me if I am wrong but weren’t there two American built plant number indicators - 1 & 4 for the body change in 89 ?

@tarussell there was 1, 2 and 4 but I think American trucks were all 4. I think, it’s been a long time.

(Fyi, Tom and I worked in a Toyota dealer parts dept many MANY moons ago.)

For me that would be right around 9,945 moons ago…. we got old at some point along the way !

I liked the early 4Runners. Missed an opportunity to buy a 85 from a buddy years back.

I’m jonesing to drive this thing. Gotta get this master cylinder thing sorted out and then bleed the brakes and go for a test drive. It’s still got a ways to go before I’d feel safe driving it around town (tires are from 06 and the front brakes need to be gone through) but it should be close. I’ve yet to pop the hubs on the front to see how those look. Need to drain and change the axles, trans, t-case, radiator, power steering fluids. Should probably do a thermostat and timing belt change on it. Guarantee it needs new shocks and the front end probably needs gone through. The clutch master is dry but the clutch is working so I’m hoping just a flush on that. No clue if the AC works and honestly not concerned at this moment. The carpets and seat need a very thorough deep cleaning. Windows need to be retinted as it’s peeling. The passenger wing window was smashed so it needs replaced. Passenger rear needs a new axle seal.

Long list above but really, tires, brakes, fluids, and she’s ready for inspection and driving.

Forgive me if you have messed with these before -

Granted you're in Texas so corrosion isn't as much of a thing but when you take the hubs off replace the bolts with the Marlin Crawler (or similar) studs and nuts. SO much nicer to work with. Also, may want to invest in a set of the conical washer thingies beforehand. They liked to disappear/corrode to dust/PO didn't put them back on, etc.

Mocked it up anyways and I can easily bend the lines to fit. With some luck, I’ll be driving this thing out of the garage this weekend under its own power.
Just as a side bar note : you could also use an FJ80 Land Cruiser master cylinder with a larger bore size - works great on the little Yota’s with bigger tires.

Not sure you will ever get the air out of that over the booster line. Other wise looks good
