I have a 90 Blazer 4x4 700r4 and the tranny takes forever to shift into 2nd and when it does it slams the gear like it has a shift kit. The previous owner installed a rebuilt engine and said the tranny shifted like that for the last 3 years. Also feels abit sluggish. It does the same thing from 2nd to 3rd.
If i jump on the throttle it goes through the gears find, just shifts firmly.
Any ideas?
Thanks

hmmm

You should try adjusting the tv cable.

tranny

try the cable, and also have you changed the tranny fluid or the filter. my trans was not shifting right, and felt real slugish. I changed the trans fluid and the filter and it was back to normal.

i will try the fluid and filter first. How do i adjust the cable? is there a write up or is it in a Chiltons book i can buy?
Thanks

The cable is not adjustable on a 700r4. It may be that it is kinked or improperly routed. Since you mentioned that the engine was replaced by the PO it may also be that they pinched the cable and it is binding up. To the best of my knowledge there is no adjustment on those cables.

Actually there is a way to adjust the cable, Once the weather clears up, I'll post up pics of the parts I'm about to go over. Just behind the TBI unit, between the dizzy and the drivers side valve cover is a bracket where the TV cables and the throttles cables are attached. The TV cable has a plastic peice with a silver half moon on the side. This half moon is what allows the TV cable to be adjusted. Now it sounds to me like the cable is bound up, but if you press the half moon, you should be able to move the cable freely in and out. If not, the cable is bound up and you'll have to get another one. If the cable moves, adjust it so there is slight tension when the throttle is at the fully closed position.
You can also check the cable from the tranny side by removing it from the tranny. Front passenger side of the pan on top of the pan housing. Remove the one bolt that holds the cable in place and pull it from the housing. Using needlenose pliers, unhook the linkage, and use the pliers to keep the linkage from falling into the pan. If it falls, you're pulling the pan to fix it. From here, the cable should move freely, if not the cable is bound and the autoparts store is in your future.
Just remember if you purchase a new cable that if its shifting late on light throttle, the cable is too tight. If it's shifting too early, the cable is too loose.

the cable moves freely(to me). it does not feel like it is sticking or bounding anywhere. How do you adjust it at the half moon?
Thanks

FYI. The cable is fully adjustable on a 700r4 and must be adjusted properly or you can do severe damage to the trans due to improper fluid pressure. It is called a Throttle Valve cable. or TV cable
For better explaination and how to adjust read this: http://www.tvmadeez.com/article/index.php

Tried adjusting the TV/Detent cable and it worked right away.....twice. i drove it up the street it shifted to 2nd and third when i should and not as violent. stopped. drove it back same thing..stopped and now its shifted too high and hard. tried adjusting it many more times and it will not work again. so im off to find a new cable. hopefully this is the only problem

got the cable. dropped the hook back into the pan. guess im getting a new transmission pan gasket tomorrow. hopefully this is it

when you get an tv cable that sets and then shifts bad again, often it is debris in the tv valve bore of the vb, this area is really sensitive to dirt. Try flushing the tv bore by stroking the cable under the hood while the truck is fast iding and letting it snap back against the spring pressure a few times. this usually increases the tv pressure enough to flush the **** from the vb. It is a good idea to replace the cable as well because they fray inside the sheith and hang up.

Well whatever happend with the cable? I think my TV cable needs to be adjusted but after reading that article I might just take it to a transmission shop... unless someone feels like breaking it down into easier steps for me to understand.:o
