i have a 90 jimmy 4x4 i put it in park postion but truck still rools every gerar works on tranny but park what could be the problen i checked linkage looks good

Either the linkage is out of adjustment or the parking pawl inside the trans is broken.

I don't have a clue what that would cost. I don't think I have ever heard of one breaking.
I'm sure they do, but never ran into it.

I seem to remember they are pretty close to the output shaft, you might be able to get to it from that end.
Of course, if you can't, then everything has to come out to get to it.

I assume that the transfer case is not in neutral...........

Remove the transmission pan, check to be sure the nut holding the internal linkage quadrant to the selector shaft is not loose. Cheeck the two bolts holding the park rod guide to the case to be sure these have not backed off, and finally, remove this guide and let the park rod come down. Be sure the "bullet" section at the rear of the rod has not broken off. If the parking pawl is broken, you should find the broken section laying in the pan when you remove it. The parking pawl can be removed with the trans in the vehicle but it is not an easy task. Hopefully you will not have to go there.

had this happen on one of ours, it was the pawl but it was under warranty so not sure how much it would cost.

You can definately fix the pawl without pulling the trans. You just pull the pan - plus this gives you a clear view of what the linkage is doing inside the unit. It may just be a broken spring. However, if the problem is with the notches on the output shaft, then the whole trans has to be torn down.
