So I have been chasing this issue for quite some time and I had thought I had it resolved. Well now I can replicate the issue and make it blow the fuse all the time. With the tilt all the way up I can turn the blinker on just fiine and with the blinkers on when I start to lower the tilt you can here the fuse pop. before I tear into this I figure I would post. So is it a turnsignal switch that I need or is there a wiring harness that goes throught there that needs to be replaced.

It would be a bonus if this resolve the cruse issue also. The cruse dose not work but it is all on the same lever.

thanks in advance

The harness runs down through the outside of the column. Probably a short there. Dissasembly and inspection required. I think you allready diagnosed your problem.

I had problem and replaces whole switch and redid the tilt guts and still pop fuses. . :doah:

found wire down frame left side fell out of old brittle snapped off frame clips and melted off and bare wires on exhaust pipe when over bumps. :doah:

If the truck has a trailer hitch, thats a good place to start chasing wires--seen many butcher installations using tape or scotch locks that lets wires corrode or short out...the plug itself can be bad too..

If you have to get into it this far, you can probably just repair the wire(s) in question instead of replacing the whole assembly. Would stand to reason that if it pops solely based on tilt position, one or more wire jackets have been abraded/cut and are shorting. Some shrink tube, MAYBE solder would probably solve the whole issue.

I'd be a lot less inclined to trust aftermarket (chinese) plastic parts (the turn signal assembly) than I would my shrink wrapping/soldering skills.

I second checking trailer wiring. Even if its a plug and play kit, they often get water in them.

Open all the connections up behind the hitch, and make sure they are clean and dry.

Cant' tell you how many i've opened to find water from the last deep boat launch 5 yrs ago...

Does anyone have any tips and or pointers before I dig into this column? I can even see any wires and I dont real see how to get the casking on the out side apart. I had hoped it was split some how but does not appear to be. Any advise up front would be help full

thanks

Not sure on GM, but on my Ford, I pulled the steering wheel, unbolted the turnsignal switch, unplugged it from below, and tied a string to it.

Pulled the whole harness up and out. Replaced the switch assembly, used the string to pull the harness back down the shaft.

That was on my '79, noticed the other day that my '89 is now not only failing to return from a right turn, but sometimes switches to a right signal by its self when I spin the wheel too fast.

I'm going to pull the wheel this week to see what is going on, may have to dig out the string again......

Steering wheel puller, lock plate removing tool and patience. Once you get to the turn signal switch, you will see a small bracket/tab attached at about 10:00. You will need to remove that, it it attached at the base of the multi-function switch.
Remove the rest of the screws on the turn signal switch and it will be to come out as soon as you unplug the flat plug connector at the base of steering column. Now fishing it up through in and around the column can be frustrating, tie a string on before you pull the old switch connector up and out.
This will help getting the new wires and connector back down.
Just make sure to take photos so you can reference them for reinstall.

What is the lock plate removing tool?

Just Google, "Gm Lockplate removing tool". It would be easier than me trying to describe it to you. They don't cost much, i think i paid around 15 bucks for mine at NAPA.
