1990 v2500 suburban. General Maintenance

The suburban to take the family exploring, wherever that may be.
Installed the bilstein 7100 shocks. Ride is much improved, needs a little more rebound dampening but overall much improved 20210527_195953.jpg20210527_200021.jpg20210527_200021.jpg

Had some time this weekend so I started on the front shock install. I got some furd towers and finally figured out how to mount them. I cut off the factory bump stop bracket and used one of the original holes with the upper hole on the shock mount and drilled the lower hole. The drivers side mount had to be trimmed to clear the steering shaft. Passenger side needed the ac lines bent slightly for clearance.20210531_130930.jpg
I made some quick lower shock mounts and burned them in right on the factory mounts, because I'm lazy.20210531_130855.jpg
Got the shocks mounted and went for a quick drive, definitely needed more rebound.
Pulled the shocks apart and replaced the 8 stack on rebound with a 12 stack. Its much better but still needs some tuning. Overall all a little more compression and some more low speed rebound and it should be perfect. 20210531_145219.jpg

Decided to start on the front bumper today.
Started by cutting the front frame horns off square. Made some mounting plates out of 1/4x4 flat bar and welded the frame side on.20210605_172034.jpg20210605_172043.jpg
Whipped up some bumper brackets in CAD and cut them out of my sheet of 3/16 hot rolled with my chinee prasma cuttel. 20210605_172717.jpgGot them cleaned up and welded to the mounting plates. Spaced them at 3/4" and boxed them in with some 1/8 hot rolled.20210605_211444.jpg20210605_211447.jpg
20210605_211452.jpgBolted the brackets up and started bending tube, decided I was hot and tired and called it a night.20210605_210941.jpg
I will pick it up again tomorrow.

Today I got the tubing notched and fitted. Welded it together and capped the ends.
Hung the finished product and painted it with the finest krylon black.20210606_145544.jpg
Mounted it for the last time and installed the closeout/skid plate. Skid plate is made out of 3/16 aluminum and dimpled.
Also fitted it with 3/4" D rings for recovery points.20210606_165519.jpg20210606_171618.jpg

Small update here.
Revalved the front shocks about 6 times and settled on a hybrid stack of .12 and .10 shims on compression and a straight. 008 stack on rebound.
Built a new steering drag link. I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out.20210613_164408.jpg

So it's been awhile since I've really done anything with the Sub other than drive it.
Recently the radiator started leaking and it was the wrong radiator anyway.
It was the 28x17x1.25 and it would cause the engine to overheat with the ac on,so I replaced with the big 28x19x2.5 rad.
I also decided to install an auxiliary transmission cooler and a pusher fan that comes on with the ac compressor.
Hopefully all that will keep the temps in check with this nuclear heat we have been having lately.
Of course I am terrible with pichers so all I have is one of the cooler/fan,also note the super bright chinee led offroad lights.20220721_190207.jpg

Time for an update.
Finally got my winch mounted. It's a Badlands 12k from Hazard Fraught and I used the Badlands universal mounting plate as a base.
I cut up the plate and integrated it into my front bumper. I also converted it to synthetic rope to lighten things up, losing the wire rope and roller fairlead took about 35 lbs off. The finished bumper/winch mount weighs 45 lbs, with winch installed I wound guess around 100 lbs total.
After getting it installed and wired it was time to wind the rope on the drum. Of course it was 1° and snowing when I got around to that. I hooked it to the hitch on my pickup and used the parking brake to make drag as the winch pulled it in. 85 feet of synthetic rope fit with room to spare.
I also recently installed a set of Hella valuefit 7 led lights, those suckers are bright!

Time for another update. Decided it was finally time to build a rear bumper with a spare tire carrier.
Found a chunk of 3x5 rectangle tubing with 3/16 wall.
Cut the back of the frame square and boxed the ends. Cut the tubing to size and made caps for the ends. Whipped up some frame brackets and got them tacked on. That's all the progress I have for now, more updates tomorrow 20231028_143947.jpg20231104_182425.jpg20231104_195652.jpg20231104_201457.jpg

Finally got back on this project and got it wrapped up this weekend. Bent up some tube for the tailgate spare tire carrier and got looking good. Decided I wanted a recessed license plate so I cut and flipped the center of the bumper, boxed it all back in so it looks ok.
Made a Jerry can mount for the tailgate and got it all welded up. Painted it and installed a pair of led license plate lights.
Mounted the bumper, greased the bearings and installed tailgate.
Put the heavy af toyo mt spare up there and I am super happy with it. It swings smooth and seems very solid even with all that weight hanging off of it...
On to the pitchers

Looks great

You still got the shiny wheels? If so can you look to see if any markings as to what brand/model? Those look to have the old school hole spacing from a 15” rim on a 17” rim, which is what I’m after. All the 17’s I’ve found (in 6 lug so that may be the issue) have bigger holes or different spacing

Saw this just today...

Yeah, I am well aware of the hazards of using a hitch ball for recovery and as such do not do it. I am not stressing the ball using it to wind up the winch line lol

I recommend moving away from the trailer spindle and using a solid latch at the far end. Have you driven around much with the tire on there? Probably shakes, but should be OK to run for a while. Eventually they do crack and fall off, though. The double-shear style seems to hold up a lot better.

Just out of curiosity, where did the spindle fail? I looked though that thread and didn't see any pictures of the failure.
