Hey all, I've got a 1989 3/4 ton suburban with the TBI 350 TH400 and NP241. I found a 1991 squarebody 1 ton 3+3 someone is parting out on Facebook and it has the 6.2 diesel 4l80E and NP205. I'm wondering how much trouble a swap from a 1991 would be vs any of the newer 4l80s. I know with the newer ones you need a stand alone computer and such but I thought the GM computers for the trucks didn't change until 1992. I'm wondering if the 1991 could be as simple as taking the 4l80, 205, the computer and the driveshafts (if I can use them), and running whatever misc wires I need to for the torque converter lockup and such. I understand the computer will be programmed differently because it's a diesel but could I get a tune from a reputable local shop or simply re use my current chip? I just want to know if there is a difference between the 1991 4l80Es that still operated using the 87-91 computer or if it would be just as much trouble as buying a newer one and a standalone controller. Hoping someone can guide me in the right direction, thanks!

few ways to do this . the 6.2 diesel uses a stand alone for the 4l80-e . can be retro fitted to work yes.

second is redo the plugs on your harnness at computer and swap to the newer style and go that way . or piggy back in the extra wires and find the correct ecm for tbi and 4l80-e use .

3rd and mabye best option for best bang for the buck is www.usshift.com .

Ok thanks for the info. So if I found a computer from a 91 tbi truck with a 4l80e I could make the factory stand alone work? And do you know if the stand alone was only used for 91? Because I think after that they're integrated into the computer

no no .

stand alone is just that .

and other option was factory computer that does both .

i gave you the 3 most common options that guys do .

i my self am doing the 3rd . ussshift controller with tons of options.
