Replaced left side shaft and seal today no prob. Went to replace right side axel seal pulled it and it is different than the left side. Diameter in and out seam the same as left side but the thickness of the actual seal seams to be alot thinner, like a little over a 1/4 or so . Please does anyone have an answer for this !?

There should be no difference side to side.

There are all sorts of things that could have happened since the axle was new, to include a "repair" axle bearing, which as I recall sometimes integrated the seal.

If what is there is JUST the seal, pull it, buy the proper replacement and be done.

So what is there is about 2" in there is some kind of seal, appears to be about an inch overall. Then there is a bearing that appears to be a little less than an inch and finally there is another seal towards the outside and it's total thickness is about 3/8". The pic is without the outer seal installed, the seal that I want to replace. So does this appears to be a repair of some sort? Thanks for your reply and any info.

Been awhile since I dug into one, but that appears to be a repair bearing to me.

Looks like there is enough surface left for a seal, but less than what the original seal takes. If you can find the ID and OD of the original (factory) seal, you can almost certainly find another one that has the same specs, but is thinner.

Looks like someone put a double seal on that side. Axle shaft is probably not sealing at the outer location.

If that is a seal in there, the oil isn't going to get to the bearing from the differential center section, at least not well. It may not seal to the axle well, and possibly lets some oil in. I would check the bearing area on the axle for damage.

If I didn't know any better I'd say it looked like someone hammered in a axle saver bearing backwards and rammed it deep enough to get the stock seal in the housing end.

An axle saver bearing would be wider than normal and has a seal built in. But hammering it backwards would put the integrated seal in first will starve the bearing for oil. Plus I wonder what the housing end looks like after that got rammed in there.
