The name has probably been used a thousand times but that's what it is.

Back in 1991 this V1500 was sold to a large ranch realtor who took high end clients all over South Texas ranch shopping.

After that (circa 93/94) a feller named James bought it as his retirement rig to tow is boat to his lake house or take his family skiing. More or less it was used as a recreational vehicle.

Around 2001 he sold it to his buddy Dave. Dave bought it to replace his '72 Suburban that he had owned since '73. At this time Dave was retired and was doing some contract work and drove it to CA a few times but after that he rarely drove it and only really used it to go to his buddies ranch in Leakey, TX or Lake LBJ for a weekend of jet skiing. Once again, it was essentially just used for recreation. I met Dave in 2005 and always told him that if he ever got rid of it to call me and I'd buy it.

So fast forward to 2014 and the original fuel pump goes out. I helped him roll it into the shop and it sat there until a month ago. Here's why: his friend who has the ranch in Leakey also had a squarebody Suburban that at one time had the fuel pump replaced. Instead of dropping the tank, they cut a hole inside the body and made it such that you didn't have to drop the tank to change the pump. Dave wanted to do that. I cringed and told him he was out of his mind. If it was a ranch Suburban, fine, but not that one. So it sat for 5 years. Finally for Christmas I bought him a Bosch pump and told him I would come over and swap it for him cuz I was tired of it sitting.

Well, I went over and dropped the tank and it was garbage. So we ordered a new tank, sending unit and some other odds and ends. Shortly after that Dave had a mild stroke limiting his activity. I should clarify that he is in his early 70's and I am currently 35.

So it sat for a few more months. I found out my wife was pregnant and decided to sell some shit off so my wife could stay home with the baby so I sold my 2018 Jeep JKU. I told Dave that I was gonna be buying something relatively cheap for daddy babymobile and asked if he wanted to unload the Sub. He said he would think about it.

A few weeks later he called me and we made a deal. My brother and I showed up and finished the fuel pump install and took it straight to Discount Tire to get some new 31" Falken AT's.

Now I've had great luck with Falkens but these were not the same.

It had a terrible vibration and I took the Sub home and checked the front end. The driver side bearings were a little sloppy so I went ahead and replaced pass and driver bearings.

Still vibrates bad. Tonight I'm sitting at work and will be rotating the tires around to see if the vibration follows a certain tire. If so, ill2 get that corrected with Discount Tire tomorrow.

All the AC parts are on their way since the compressor front seal leaked all the r12 out. I will be converting it to r134a.

Anyways, hopefully you guys appreciate a little history. I'll be updating as I go.

The goal is to make this an awesome DD with some mods. The 350 runs fantastic but I do have a LQ4 sitting in the garage which will eventually find its way in The Yeti.

I might do a small 3" lift from ORD but I'm still up in the air.

Falkens are hit or miss. Dtc will take care of it. If they are p rated, you may want to have them swapped out to lt tires. Customer satisfaction swap. Pretty easy to pull off as a sales guy.

Well, got new tires. Still vibrates. I sorta feel like a prick but it is what it is.

I honestly have no idea where it's coming from. I have a pile of parts already including ball joints and tie rod ends but I hate just throwing parts at something until it's fixed but I might just do that in this case. Then get an alignment. If that doesn't do it, I'll start digging into suspension like bushings and what not. I do eventually plan on a small lift so that might be a good time to do that so we'll see.

Yea, I hear ya but ime driveshaft vibrations tend to be higher pitched. I'll def get under there and take a look.

I installed some Warn Premium hubs last night after work. I never had a lot of faith in the auto hubs and these sure look sharp. Well worth the money.

Now that I have the ability to upload pics, I will make a better effort at documenting this build with pictures.

Just some specs on my 1991 V1500 frame and chassis.

Frame thickness - .195 to .210 measured in several spots along frame rails.

Rear leaves - 56" 5 pack

I've heard people spout off various numbers regarding frame thickness and spring back number so I thought I'd share mine.

Another thing to check for the source of the vibration is u-joint. The front axles still spin when locked out and can give a slight vibration at speed. Lock in the hubs and it gets worse.

Rear driveshaft will always be the same vibration.

So I finally pulled the rear DS. The u joint on the pinion side was so tight that I could barely turn it with my hand. The xfercase side was fine.

Anyways, went to change both of them and made a critical newbie error. Bent the freaking yoke with my press so the DS is at a driveshaft shop getting new joints, yoke, balance and ha ing the clean the rust off the sealing surface on the slip yoke.

I'm just about done effing with this damn vibration.

Also, the upper radiator had been repaired at one time with one of those little plastic repair doohickeys. Naturally, it began leaking. Not that it wasn't on my radar, I just wanted to finish one repair before moving onto the next. The previous owner had installed an Edelbrock water pump at one point but it started leaking after 20 years of service so he replaced it with a new Oreillys unit. I'm gonna contact Edelbrock about getting it rebuilt. It's a really nice unit. If and when that happens, I'll flush the cooling system and replace the other other hoses, as well.

I'll go ahead and replace the front u joints and axle u joints soon too since that rear one was so worn.

Good gawd.

Got the driveshaft back with a new yoke, u joints and a balance job.

Still vibrates.

A fellow coworker with a squarebody has a new set of wheels and tires that I'm gonna bolt on later this week to see if there's a wheel/ture issue that Discount hasn't picked up on.

Also, I already replaced the AC compressor, orifice tube, accumulator and blew the lines out so the AC system is ready to be vacuumed and charged. I don't have a vacuum pump or gauges so I'm gonna swing by a buddies place after work today and grab that so I can get the AC working this evening. It's too damn hot to not have it.

Oh, and as far as getting that Edelbrock water pump rebuilt, it's a pretty simple process. Just send it back and pay em 100 bucks. I'll take care of that on Monday and once I get it back I'll go through the process of flushing the cooling system out and replacing the hoses. I had to replace the upper hose cuz it had a pinhole leak.

My wife wants to take a trip to Destin, FL in the next couple weeks. We have a class C RV that we might mob out there and tow our (her!) Prius with us or The Yeti and just stay in a condo.

From a coolness standpoint I want to take the burb of course but it makes more sense to take the RV. If only the RV could tow the burb lol

Finally got around to knocking out the ball joints. Took a little longer than expected but got it done. Ruined the drivers side spindle so ordered a pair of replacement Yukon spindles. Luckily Amazon was able to get them to me the next day so it wasn't down for long.

Also, I was able to finish up the AC. Rear AC is blocked for now since I broke a fitting on the rear evap and didn't really feel like messing with it at the moment but it will be fixed someday. New AC Delco compressor, accumulator, orifice tube, green O rings, and blew the lines out. I was worried that r134a would suck compared to the r12 I was used to in other older vehicles but it blows pretty damn cold. My wife wanted me to turn it down but I wasn't having it.

I still need to change the front and rear diff fluid soon. Other than that it's pretty much done for now. I do plan on lifting it but there's nothing pressing at the moment that has to be done. We are going to Denver on a roadtrip soon so I'm thinking of swinging by Offroad Design personally to do a little shopping.

If those u joints were factory they are locked in with injected plastic. Put a torch on it and it comes out like a big popped zit! Lol
Nice burb! Welcome!

Did it vibrate before you got the new tires? You may have an out of round or plain bad tire.

So we will be taking The Yeti to CO in early Oct. Initially we were gonna take our Class C RV but we took it to FL a few weeks back and stayed at Grayton Beach State Park (highly recommend) but I really wanted to take a road trip in some old iron so I told the wife we would take this and stay in a cabin or something back in the mountains somewhere.

We would camp but she's gonna be 7.5 months preggo and I'll be nice and let her live a somewhat normal life away from the house.

Things to do:

Change diff fluid front and rear

Inspect wiring harness under hood. I suspect something is rubbed through causing an odd idle issue and miss under load.

Basic tune up including oil change, cap, wires, etc

Anyways, should be a good trip. Plenty of time to get things prepared so I'll update as I go.
