I would also say it has a 4l80e. Nobody wants them things

Should be easy enough to find out, if there is wires going to the tranny then it would be a 4L80E, if not then a TH400. Even easier would be to look at the dash and see if it show's an overdrive on the gear selector.
I sincerely doubt it's a standalone controller, since the 1991 454/4L80E trucks are not.

I haven't bought the truck yet, but if I do the first thing I'll do is yank the POS 4l80 and use it for a goose decoy anchor.

4L80E is a TH400 with OD. They are a very good trans. The stand alone makes them even more desireable for our uses.

Mine is intergrated, they can be made into non-electric manual shift.
