1993 3/4 Ton Suburban Build (Solid Axle Swap)

looks good.

You need to do something about that tie rod though ;)

Agreed. Stupid ford and their factory goofy tie rod. The thing I have to figure out though is most of what I've read says you can't just use a thicker straight tie rod cause it will contact the diff cover at full lock. And not only that, normal TRE's I guess don't work for these knuckles. I did find Barnes 4x4 sells 1" offset heim joints. So I may just use those and then get some straight tube and build my own tie rod. It would mean drilling out the knuckle to accept a straight through bolt, but not a big deal to go that route

that is goofy and I'm surprised nobody sells a beefy aftermarket (bent) tie rod for this application.

See if ORD will make one for you, they do have the same axle.

I have the same axle well sort off mine doesn't hit the pumpkin though. Maybe it is a later axle thing.

I talked with them about it about a month ago and all they said was their TRE's they sell won't work on this axle. They said they do offer heims too, but they weren't sure if it would clear the pumpkin. I need to call them again and really pick their brains about it.

I want to see a fleet shot so bad with the crew cab and K5.

I think I could do that for ya :waytogo:

The solution is a longer steering arm that has the tie rod at the longer distance and the drag link on the original distance.
That would clear the pumpkin

Exhaust is done for now. 2.5” true duals the whole way to some Thrush welded mufflers. Put a new O2 on too. I just have it dump right before the axle for right now. I can finish out to the back later on if I want to. I think it sounds real good. I’m happy with it

That group photo makes my pants so incredibly tight!

:rotfl:

Looks like you could do a 3/8 skid plate under the whole thing :D

You’re probably right. The whole exhuast is above the bottom of the frame too.

You know, there are a lot of great features to these GMT400’s. The factory flat belly is incredibly nice. I’m literally just gonna bolt up a flat piece of steel to the crossmembers to protect the tcase and thats it. It makes me think I should have started with one of these for a crawler instead of my K5...but I do like the K5 too

I am sure you know this but, you should put tailpipes that exit the side or you risk exhaust fumes from entering the interior.

I can always add later if I want, but I have done most of my rigs like this and never had an issue with exhaust fumes. Sure you can get some if idling around with all the windows down, but normal driving down the road with windows up, I don't get any. Especially this vehicle which is sealed up nicely.

I scrolled back thru the thread, but wasn't sure, are those 35s? I was thinking you had 37s on the crewcab, but I must be remembering wrong.

Shoot the crew cab almost looked like 33’s in the pics.

Crew Cab has 285/75/16’s on 16x8’s. The Suburban has 35/12.5/17’s on 17x9’s
