1993 3/4 Ton Suburban Build (Solid Axle Swap)

Good to know.

I’d bet Your front end will likely settle some of those springs haven’t had much constant weight or use on them. I know one of my trucks did that.

I’m eager to hear how you like the ez rides under that big block.
I’ve been back and forth between them or the HD’s or just going ORD custom all the way around if I decide to not do the shackle flip.
Those springs were under my 6.5 crew cab for like 6 months, they are as settled as they come lol.

Oh ok, I knew he got them from you but I didn’t know they had been under your truck that long.

And I wouldn’t say “as settled as they come” .
“broke in” maybe
I’ve pulled some springs that were “overly settled” lol

Installed the factory front bumper again, just for a while. I am planning to build my own bumper for it, but for the time being I figure it was pretty easy to just put the stock one on to keep local authority happy. I trimmed the ends of the bumper as it was going to rub the tires just driving around

And I installed my new aftermarket cable shifter. In the pic the base isnt bolted down yet, but everything else is hooked up. I might need to play with the adjustments a bit more after its on the road to make sure it goes through all the gears good. But at least I can shift the tranny again

I need to look and see if mine is going to have the shifter issue too. In all likeliness it probably will. I don’t know that I’ll like the aftermarket shifter for my setup

I think they went to factory cable shifter in 95. So if its older than that it should have a mechanical linkage shifter like mine

That’s what I was also thinking. You mentioned doing a NV4500 swap in your v3500. Did you have to do anything with the ecm when you did that?

I may go ahead and toss my 4500 in the burb since I have all the parts for it

Well, I also did an 8.1 swap at the same time as the NV4500 swap. With that being said, the wiring harness I got was from an 8.1 that originally had a 4l80e behind it. But also at the same time I got the 8.1, the wiring harness and ECM were reworked to be stand alone to make the swap easier. I do still have the plugs for the 4l80e on my harness (just zip tied them out of the way). When I first swapped everything in, it ran fine. I did have a few weird idle characteristics (mainly when I would push in the clutch and put it in neutral coasting to a stop sign, it was like the idle would hunt for a little bit before smoothing out). I then had a custom tune done to the ECM and he started with a tune that was an 8.1 with a manual behind it and then did his performance tune from there. That helped the idling a lot and now drives completely normal.

Don't know if that info will help you as it's a bit different since I did an 8.1 swap at the same time, but hopefully it helps a little bit

No that does help some. I also spoke with another truck buddy this morning and he confirmed that I’ll have to get a new chip burned for mine if I go that route. But luckily, he had the capability to do that for me when/if the time comes

Shock hoops done and shocks installed. Used DIY4x’s knuckle shock tabs on the axle. I’m pretty happy with how they turned out. I did Bilstein 5125’s just like my blazer and crew cab. I am a true believer now that a real good shock makes a big difference on and off road, even with leaf springs.

Drove it outta the shop. It has no exhaust yet (open headers currently) brakes still need more bleeding, tranny shifter needs more messing with, needs driveshafts modified, and currently the front is 4.10 and the rear is 3.73...but considering pretty much exactly a month ago it was completely stock...I’m happy with the progress

Man that’s perfect!
What headers are on it? Do they clear everything well?

So how is it running with the 3.73 and 35" tires?
Trying to see what that engine is comfortable with on tire size for extended periods of driving at highway speeds on flat.
I have the same engine going in my 74 suburban

I guess “open headers” was a bit misleading, they are still just the stock exhaust manifolds

So far all I did was drive it 10 mph up and down my road, haha. So cant tell you yet. But the rearend will be getting swapped to 4.10 soon anyways

That is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen!

Thank you
