1993 3/4 Ton Suburban Build (Solid Axle Swap)

I will keep my membership for another 15 years so I can be here when you start posting "old man" stuff. :p:
I am older than you and I am still tent camping.
I am however preparing for the time when I can't anymore so I am building the rv

Oh, I could do it. But I'm not going to do it volutarily. Especially not if I have a badass crew cab with a nice pickup bed camper. Like some people around here....

So you probably would not be backing either.
I am trying to recondition my body after the heart attack, hopefully I can do that next year.
We were hiking yesterday and I had about 25 lbs backpack on my back and had my 3 year old on some stretches on top of it.
We only did a 3 mile hike but I know I need more time for a heavier and longer trip

Took the burb on another ~1100 mile road trip to see my wife’s family down in Richfield/Monroe Utah. At the very start of the trip down had a weird issue pop up with a hesitation at very random times. As we kept going the hesitation got worse and worse. I was trying to decide if it was fuel related, but then I heard it backfired through the throttle body, so I knew it was ignition related. Then my mind went back to when I did a full tune up on this thing before we drove it to CO earlier this year, and I remembered the distributor cap I bought (cheap auto parts store one) for some reason gave me fits installing it as it never really felt like it cinched down really well or fit really well. So I pulled over at a random exit in the middle of nowhere Utah to check it out. Turned out the little screws holding the cap on had backed off and the cap was loose. I even tried to cinch it down again and it still was weird (must have been a small anomaly in the molding that was causing the issue...who knows). Luckily I kept the old cap in the back of the burb, so I just swapped it back in and after that it ran like a champ without any problems at all. Once we got to my in-laws I did go by another new cap and swapped it in so I had a good spare in the back, and we drove home the 8 hrs today with no issues at all.

The whole time I got just barely over 12 mpg’s consistently. Exactly what I’ve come to expect out of a big block driving highway (not towing). And overall couldn’t have been happier. Comfortable to drive in for the whole family and set the cruise at about 80 mph the whole time just cruising. I love this rig!

Below are a couple pics of the rig out front of my in-laws house with Monroe Mountain in the background. I did swap on the 285 bfg’s from my blue crew cab for the trip again...didn’t feel like burning up the newer 35” pro comps for a road trip

Did you go stop by Mystic Hot Springs while you were in Monroe? I love the Richfield area.

No we didn’t. I wanted to but the in-laws already had things planned out. Did go shooting in the hills outside Monroe for about 5 hrs with the whole family. Everyone really enjoyed that.

The Richfield/Monroe area is really cool. I like it

Yeah it was super nice out this weekend in our area I'm guessing it was over that way too.

Yeah, it was way nice. Obviously a bit cold in the mornings and evenings, but clear blue sky's the whole time, which was nice for the travel days back and forth too

This story reminds me of the time I was going to run 2 trails in 1 day with a couple buddies, Red Cone and Twin Cone. One of the buddies bought a cheap parts store fuel pump that failed on the way to the second trail so we one ran the 1 trail that day.....

You know what's funny about that, is I replaced that crappy cheap pump with another crappy cheap parts store pump, and that pump is still running in my K5 to this day, haha. And I wasn't the only reason we didn't hit two trails that day, part of the reason was Wade's battery almost blew it's top off before we got to the top and he had to rob your second battery.

That was a fun day

It’s snowing quite a bit this weekend at our house. Over 6” right now and it’s still coming down pretty good. But took the burb to run to the store. My goodness is this thing the bomb in the snow. Works so good, and looks good doing it too

Up earlier on this page I mentioned when we took this thing on a road trip to UT and I had distributor issues. Well throwing a new cap and rotor on it seemed to only temporarily fix the issue. I then used the burb again a few weeks later to go pick up another project vehicle and tow it back. Half way back from that trip the exact hesitation issue that showed its face on the UT trip came back up. I could tell it was still ignition related but couldn’t quite figure it out. I was talking about it with my brother on the phone and he said he’d mail me an extra TBI distributor he had in his parts stash that was in known good working order that I could swap into this thing to see if that helps (fun fact: this new/used distributor was actually out of the original TBI350 that was in my blue crew cab which I pulled to swap the 8.1 into). Well, once the new distributor showed up I pulled the distributor that was in the TBI 454 and during further inspection it looks like inside the distributor under the rotor was crazy rusty (see pic). Everything else looked fine on it including the gear that meets with the cam gear. I’m hoping this is the culprit for my issues I’ve been having.

So, I swapped in the new distributor, set base timing, and have put about 150-200 miles on it so far and it’s running as it should with no hesitations so far. I’m hoping this is the last of my issues with that.

I'm sure all that rust wasn't doing you any favors, regardless.

I had one of my rear taillights go out on this thing. Originally thought it was just a bulb but after replacing the bulb with a new one, it was clear it was actually an issue with the “circuit board” inside the tail light lens itself. But I found a good deal on a full set of replacement tail lights with bulbs and also replacement headlights and turn signal lenses in a bundle back on Amazon for a pretty good deal. And it was needed as my headlight lenses were needing replaced anyways. Below shows the new headlights and taillights installed. It’s small, but does help the overall look of the truck...plus having brighter headlights now is a plus

And how much would that pretty good deal be?
I am considering freshening up my 96
