Got the van out.

Replaced the sending unit and pump.

Injectors wont fire, had the new ICM that I had bought tested and it passed like 10 times in a row.

Getting fuel to the tbi, and can get the thing to run with 9v battery to the injector posts.

Its got to be the computer right? The harness is a whole 4 ft long and looks fine.
Is there any difference in TBI computers for what I should look for?
Who has a working one laying around that they can part with so I can get this thing sold?

have you tried a new ignition module?

also have you tried to unplug the TPS?

I bought a new ICM. It did not work, I then had it tested and it passed 10 runs on the machine.

I have not tried the TPS. That can affect power to the injectors?

Yes computers are different
What are the last 4# on the ecm?

Download the proper service manuals from the link in my signature, and follow the "cranks but will not run" or whatever that flow chart is called.

Doesn't have to be the ECM. Could be, but generally they aren't the culprit. ECM controls the injector ground, which is why you should test the injector connector with a noid light.

I bought a noid light test kit.

I just assumed if it fires from the 9v battery, that it is not getting power from the harness, so I did not use it.

Don't want to get too far off track, but if the injector isn't getting power, it's nothing to do with the injection setup. Noid light will tell you if the injector is pulsing and if it's got 12V, *if* it blinks while cranking. But if it doesn't blink, still have to check power and injector pulse.

A friend had a dead "box" van of similar vintage towed to his shop,he spent hours trying to figure out why it had no injector pulse--a GM dealer tech told him to check the harness where it goes under the dash from the ECM,said they fail there often, but it looked perfect..

--he also said to inspect the harness that runs near the upper a-frame on the drivers side, and thats where he found the upper control arm was rubbing on the harness spiral wrap cover, and several wires were cut and bare--after he spliced the wires back together,it fired right up..

Three other local garages had given up trying to fix that van, before he got it--they replaced a lot of sensors, ignition modules, even tried a rebuilt ECM,to no avail...

This van has it mounted under the driver seat. It goes down through a grommet in the floor and basically up the side of the trans to the back of the engine.

Ill inspect it closer I guess.

Ahh,your van is the "old" body style, yes, the computer IS under the drivers seat--my friend also had a van about that age come in that had the ECM wires chafed and cut where they went through that rubber grommet in the floor, and it also had been to other shops, and had many parts thrown at it,that didn't fix anything...seems he is the only guy in town who actually traces and checks the wiring, and doesn't just start replacing stuff, hoping it'll fix it!..

Looks a lot like my '81 G10..only photo I have on my hard drive is this one after the "Blizzard of '96" ..

No.

It was my first vehicle. Im pulling it out to get it running and sold. Maybe make some more good memories for the next high school kid :D

A "sin bin" huh ?......

I have many good memories of my van,I drove it to Nashville in 1992,and went to concerts in dozens of other places, many out of state, like NH,VT.CT,NY,and it has stickers on the windshield from New Brunswick and ME,from the previous owner..two of my best friends rode with me in it to many destinations, who sadly died young at age 36 from heart diseases...despite me owning it since 1990,its still not in bad shape considering I let it sit outside since 2003..
It has some rot patched up on it,but so does everything else I own..

I would love to put mine back on the road, and I dragged it out and put it up on jack stands last summer, replaced some brake lines and put a new master cylinder on it,and a good used muffler,in hopes of doing so---but being on SSI,your allowed to own only one vehicle "of any value"..
It used to be you couldn't own one vehicle valued over 1500 dollars, until recently..but I asked the SS office if I could put two 1980's "junkers" worth maybe 500 bucks on the road, the answer was NO,and I'd be disqualified my benefits if I did so--they do check with the registry of motor vehicles to ensure you dont cheat too..

Only way around that would be to register it in someone else's name, and that can backfire and open up a can of worms, should I be involved in an accident--it would go on their insurance,be surcharged,etc..not worth it to me..

I could swap the plates off my pickup to it,but then I'd be unable to use the truck, and I do need to haul rubbish to the dump, and plow my yard..was quite tempted to do that last month when the plates were due to expire when I went to renew them, but I figured the van will need a lot more work & parts after sitting so long--calipers,tires,a battery,etc..decided not too...:(

That's unfortunate :/

Yeah this thing was fun, but I'm not using it.

So far it's:
-New Battery
-ICM
-fuel pump relay
-Sending Unit (old one was rotted and blew gas everywhere once I got preasure)
-Fuel pump

About $300 so far.

Now that I'm getting fuel to the engine, I just gotta get it into it.

All I did to get mine to start was hook up a lawnmower gas tank to the fuel pump inlet line, drop a battery in it,and it fired up after about 10 revolutions..it hadn't been started in at least 2 years!..

I guess having only HEI and a carb has its advantages..amount spent to get it started--2 bucks for gasoline!..

It didn't want to idle at first,I had to hold it at fast idle..I added a bottle of gas treatment to the small gas tank and it smoothed right out after a minute or so,and idles perfect now..the outside of the carb looks like someone sprayed it with cream of wheat, but inside it still looks great..guess running it out of gas saved it from the ethanol curse..
But I'm betting the gas tank is fubared, after sitting so many years empty..filler neck looks very crusty too..

I should dump the oil and change it..it probably wasn't a good idea to start it with the oil that sat in it so long..too late now !..engine always did smoke a bit,its probably too loose to seize up!..
