I have a 99 suburban and there is a ticking noise coming from the oil pan area. towards the back of the motor, I know quit abit about cars and I know that it is not a rod or a main. The ticking noise gets louder when the car is in gear and under load. i do not think it is the tranny. Any help would be appreciated.

cracked flexplate or walked out flexplate bolts. Those trucks are known for it(well there is a TSB out about it).\

either way the trans needs to come out, and you likely need a flexplate.

this happened on my uncles 1999 sierra z71 and it was that one of the sparkplug wires was all messed up and he custom made some msd ones and the ticking stopped

you'd have a misfire and be able to notice the ARC from the plug wire. Not to say its a terrible thought, it is a possibility. But there is a TSB out about flexplate bolts walking out on those engines and causing a "ticking noise from the bellhousing area".

I had the same thing and it turned out to be an exhaust leak. Try that first since it would be the easiest to fix.

Probably exhaust, mine is leaking at the collector on one side as well..

I have heard of rod bearings being somewhat of a problem on the vortec rigs but I wouldnt worry too much, my 98 has 68k miles and it has a cold knock every now and then..
