Well the wife just gave the go ahead to sell my 2007 JK wrangler and buy a 4x4 burb or truck. The deal is that I have to pay off a home improvement loan before I buy. I should have around 3-5K left after the loan is paid off + an extra 250 a month. :D

Wish is for a 86-91 3/4ton 4x4 burb. or 3/4 or 1 ton crew cab SRW.
I plan to tow a 15-20 ft trailer(next buy) and taken off road often.
Small lift maybe 33-35 inch tall tires. ARB type bumper, rocker protection.

I need to do a little work on the Jeep then it will be ready to sell in about a month.....

OK guys.
Give me some ideas on what to look for.
what years are the best?
Axles to look for?
engine? I prefer a 350-383 but i can be talk out of that.
trans must be auto, I like th400. i'm thinking gear vender OD
Transfer case type?
carb vs EFI.....
Computer vs non-computer......

Maybe early next year you will see a 1leg build thread ;););)

The 91 3/4 ton Subs and Crew Cabs(CC) had the option of the 4L80E tranny. These are getting harder to find, but would fit the bill for what you want to do. They will also have A 14 bolt full floater rear end. The sub will be a 10 bolt(capable of hadling your 33-35 inch tires) while the CC will have a Dand 60(more than enough to handle 35s).

The engine will be either a throttle body injected(TBI) 350 or TBI 454(CC only. Only 2WD subs had 454s available at this time).

Hope this helps start you on the right path.

And welcome to the brotherhood.

Great info....

I will have to keep my eyes open for 91...

Thanks

Yep, 91 burb or crew is what you want.

THe burb will have a 10 bolt front, and 14 bolt rear if 3/4 ton, and thats the one you want. THe 1/2 ton has the 700r4, you want the 3/4 wiht the 4l80e.

Good luck!

I'd second the 91 V2500...

Plan on regearing though. 3.73's are barely adequate for the stock tires, let alone towing with bigger ones.

I was going to say mine came with 4.10's, but i just went and checked. 3.73's :(

Thanks guys

Look i'm paid up now.... First forum i had to pay for... will see how it goes over the next year......

You won't regret the $25 cost. It will save you that much over and over.

Well, since you payed for it, go check out the Pac region. Post up what you're looking for, and we'll try to help out if we find something. Welcome to CK5.:D

You live in SoCal. The most important thing for ME to consider is the smog issue. You may want some more creature comforts on the newer trucks but I'd be looking for something 1975 or earlier. Especially if it is a K30 crewcab.

You are right about the smog issues. I would love to get an older truck and still might if a really nice one falls in my lap. But the wife will have the last call.

Wife rules
It must be a clean good looking truck, (good paint, no rust)
It must never break down when she is riding in it.
AC is a must.
Good clean comfortable seats.
oh ya, and paid off....

Thanks guys....

My general rule is smog-exempt OR fuel injected. There are a crapload of rigs in between, but I don't like to deal with smogging a carbureted truck. The TBI runs clean, and it's easy to pass smog with them. What's really nice is if you found one that was smog-exempt AND F.I., maybe one that somebody already upgraded.:D

There wasn't a K30 before 1975. At least if there was it didn't have a Dana 60 front axle.

I don't know a lot of detail like that but was just making a general point of what I would look for. AJM, what would the 1 ton have been called pre '75? Or what would the drivetrain be?

I know there was a C30...I think there was a K30. I know once upon a time I drove a late 60's flatbed 1 ton 4x4 and it just had the same axles as a 3/4 ton only with heavier springs. I'd suspect our body style prior to the Dana 60 just got the Dana 44 front. Yours was a D44 with the Eaton Big Ass 3rd Member Rearend.

I just PMed the guy on the white Burb, a little over my price range, I ask how much without the procharger and CB radio. will see!

I like the blue one better but to far and it looks like it might have a little more body damage......Dame

With your $5k initial budget and you're couple hundred bucks a month extra you could build a very capable rig that meets your want's/needs as well as keeps your better half happy. :)

Or you could save up and buy something that's pretty much done...

Or something like this...
