I do have a question on a good carb

Welcome to CK5 !!! You won't find better GM info, or a nicer group of people anywhere on the internet.

I do want to change out the carb. It is a new Edelbrock(spelt wrong)compition series, Q-Jet Manifold, I would like to go with a more fuel saving one. Just not sure what kind to buy. Any ideas?? Mark

This is my real toy a 1994 COE Freightliner I just finished building from scratch. I contract it to the USFS Fighting Wildland Fires. This is a blast to drive 15 speeds, 435 HP Cat 3406C and a Sleeper for the end of the day. I have a 63 Willys Jeep with a V-6 155 hp engine that I take off road and beat a little for fun. Mark

Nice Truck! Man that is a set of springs!! I got to stay low for towing. Even now with a drop hitch it is a little high for my trailers. Mark

Took 8 weeks to build it!

It took me 8 weeks at 12 hours a day to build it. I welded the tank, built the frame for it plus all the pump work. I shortend the rear of the trucks frame 6 ft for better hill access backing up. It will haul a$$ going up hill to! When the Turbo kicks in you can realy feel it pulling. It has a Dual Jake Brake (3X6), Exsaust Brake and Brake Saver so going down hill loaded is easy. Only 60,000 miles on the engine and new rear ends. I love driving this truck. I put more flames on the cab and a few more goodies like Closed Circuit Video on the rear and cab top to see backing up beter. It is coverd with snow right now we had 14 inches today! Can't wait till 2006 Fire season to take it out. The fire fighters will love it. That is my summer work ,fighting wildland fires so I built this one to replace my smaller 85 GMC TopKick 1,200 Gal Tender. Thanks for the Welcome, Mark

Thats a nice truck, my kinda tow rig. I'd leave her just like she is. Welcome to the club, speaking as a newb myself, this is a cool place. Dont tell anyone I built a bitchen cherokee w/ a chev. 3.4 and 3 inch lift for my wife. Its her dd and pretty capable little wheeler. Damn fast also.

I do want to change the carb to the best one for the 454 Engine. I don't need to smoke the tires off. It has the Compitison Series on now but is could use a little smaller one the way it is geared. Never have to open the secondarys pulling so far, but when you do the fuel gauge moves like the truck does. Mark

one word... Quadrajet

Little confused on Q-Jets?

dito on the quadrajet,

my buddy paul swears by I5 carbs in souther california...my guess is they are located off the I5:D
I read the arcives on them and they talk about several kinds of carbs. I was thinking about a Rochester Q-Jet for being stock. I had one on a 1970 Chevy 350 and got allmost 18 MPG (when my foot was out of it) with it when they were new in the 70s. Not sure you can get those anymore. I have thew Q-Jet Manifold but not sure on my carb I need to get some numbers off it to check. I know it is the Edelbrock Q-Jet Design no adapter plate on it but that is all. It works great just eats a lot of fuel around 6-8 MPG driving it around and not hot rodding it. I know when you stick it in 4X4 the fuel gauge drops fast in the hills or flat ground. This just may be all a 454 can get at least some say that but it should get a little better than that. I could deal with 10-11 on the main roads bbut if that is all the better it will do I guess I can live with it. The carb on it is new so I was thinking of selling it and getting another one to see. With the price of fuel you can buy a new one fast if it is eating more than it needs! It seems to eat it like a 396 I had back a long time ago with a Holley 850 double pumper! Mark H.

I am up North just outside of Okanogan in the boonies on 40 acres in the higher foot hills. You must live where the big School Fire was this year? I could have been on it if I had my Bigger Tender done in time. Maybe next year I sure you guys will have another 1 or 2 down there to put out in 2006. Mark

You are correct.I'm about 12 miles West from where it started.Your truck would have been a big help, guys were renting farm trucks as tenders, big mess up there...

You had 14" of snow?? You must be on the east side of the mountains?? I am a diesel mechanic by trade. What rear drivers you running, 46K pounders?? The 3406C is a bit harder to get more power out of than the A & B models, but sure beats the hell out of the N-14 fleet we have at work, I just hate to work on Cummins, to re-engineer for them would be a dream to simplify alot of the layouts to make them more easy to work on.

If you need parts, let me know, I have somewhat of a collection of heavy diesel parts for Cat Cummins Detroit Duetz and Perkins.

Worst case senario you could prolly part out the drive train and recoup your money. The dodge guys said you got ripped off cause they would not pay that much for a dodge that old:rolleyes: . No resale value. I dig it duallies kick arse.:D

Cummins isn't a bad motor. I like them at the shop cause no one else likes to work on them. :D

Freaking Cat ACERT's suck, though. Water pumps are all day events.

Welcome to the club, though, man! Sweet lookin truck! BTW, I vote for a Q-jet. http://http://www.jetchip.com/products.asp?pid=23033

I am lucky I have the last year Cat made the 3406C with the Manual Injector Pump and no electronics on this engine. Mark H.

Now it will only go up in value!

Nice part now if I don't trash it, it will only go up in value not down like the new ones do. Heck new ones go down more than I paid for it driving it off the show room floor!! Mark H.

""I probley have all the HP I need my GVW (full) is 41,020 lbs pushed with 435 HP, seems to fly up the hills. It is the Manual Injector with no Electronics. Ya I live East of the Cascades about 60 miles South of Canada. Just spent most of the day cleaning up the mess the snow left. Mark H.""

""Will do it was just rebuilt 60,00 miles ago the Twin Screw rear ends are Rockwells with 46,000 lb ratings but they only let you haul 34,000 on them in WA State. My max load on the rears with water is 31,500 lbs so I am way under. Mark H.""
