2000 GMT400 CREW CAB SFA SWAP-The Warden: Fuel leak fixed and awaiting surgery…

The ultimate goal for this truck is tow duty/family camping trips/small offroad adventures.
Question time!

What may cause me to slowly loose coolant every couple of months? It's not a lot. Only gets low enough to trigger the low coolant sensor.

In a gas truck that would be a head gasket or cracked head, not sure if it's same with a diesel but I would assume so.

This is usually caused by a leak of some kind. :P

Are you finding coolant underneath the truck? Or was that your brother's truck that was leaking in the driveway? It can also be boiling off slowly if your cap is defective (or if your temps are high). Or head gasket/crack.

No leaks under the truck. Not even oil.

Truck does not get hot. I've never seen it above 200*

The truck does usually give a little puff of white smoke in the morning, but I have been contributing that to the PMD issue.

If it's a small enough leak or crack you won't notice anything other than low coolant every now and again.

I see 3 options.

1) It's leaking slowly enough you can't see it (not likely if you're losing coolant fast enough to be annoyed by it).
2) It's slowly boiling over (which would implicate your cap if your temp. sensor is accurate).
3) Head/block/gasket issue allowing coolant into the combustion chamber.

A smoke puff when cold isn't an issue, depending on how "white" it is. But that is the closest thing you have to a "smoking gun" with regards to this problem. If it is going out the tailpipe you're stuck topping it off if you don't want to tear the engine apart. Do check the oil religiously just in case it starts leaking that direction.

It's only first thing in the morning, but the puff of white smoke can be rather large at times. The oil looks great. I see no signs of any contaminants in there.

I suppose replace the PMD and clearing codes would be the first step, then go from there. I'm not extremely concerned as the truck is running quite well other than the PMD issues.

I'm not a PMD guy...how does a failing PMD cause white smoke? :dunno:

PMD usually causes fuel related issues. Everything from too much smoke, to whacky throttle. Can cause starting and stalling issues.

Well, just had a real "Here's your sign" moment. I went and scanned the codes on my truck at lunch, and pulled up a bunch of ABS codes. Duh, I don't have the front ABS sensors hooked up to anything.:doah:

There are no other codes in the system.

I'll plug the PMD in tonight and see what happens.

Yes, yes, yes, and yes.

But none of those involve WHITE smoke. Fuel-related smoke should be black or at least a grey haze (it's a progressive scale).

I wouldn't worry about the smoke. Prob leaky valve seals. Replace your radiator cap to eliminate that as an issue and pressure test the system with it cold and also with it hot. Otherwise I wouldn't worry about it.

I'd say the smoke is more of a light grey. Maybe I can catch a picture tomorrow.

Blueish grey would be oil (as Truckman said).
Blackish grey would be fuel (as you said).
Whiteish grey would be coolant (as I said).

If it just looks indistinguishably grey, start flipping coins until you are happy with the answer. ;)
