2002 Sunfire 2.4L question

I have a friend that has a 2002 sunfire with the 2.4L twin cam motor. It runs and idles really rough and the exhaust smells like its running rich with a lot of carbon monoxide smell. The check engine light finally came on after a couple of days of it running rough, etc. Is there a way to short the computer port like in our trucks and get a code? Also, where the heck is the distributor on that thing?

as far as i know there isent a Dist. on it, it should have coil on plug like all the newer chevy motors.

that would be the OBDII, you need a code scanner to get a code. autozone will do it for free.

gm hasn't put a distributor in a front wheel dive car since 89 or so (2.5L) it would mostlikely have a coil pack.
