2003 silverado z71 soon to be build thread..

for the silverado- could be the fuel pump. does yours make any weird noises when you first turn the truck on? i replaced the fuel pressure regulator and it still doesn't start right off when you first turn the key. the fuel pumps are bad in these trucks also.

fuel pump sounds good.. thanks for pointing that out..

another thing is i went to my friends garage again, hooked it back up to the computer, the maf is bad.. so i guess napa got me the bad one?? tomorrow replacing it, then see what happens...

 got the new maf on my truck.. damn feels a lot better! problem solved.. thanks you all for helpin me out and save the money on dealers labors!

Not unusal to get a bad MAF or other sensors in aftermarket parts. For Parts like that it is best to go to the dealer.

For the saturn. My only idea is a bad ECM. When they throw a bunch of unrelated codes. It usually means the computer is bad.

yep its at my friends shop, the other friend.. he works alot faster. umm should i keep the car or get the new computer n reprogram it to the car? is it expensive?

i am so focking pissed! yesterday the truck lost TONS of power. barely go up hills.. and its labor weekend, cant hook it up the the puter and see what codes is throwing now!!! until i came across to my warranty paper i got 100 k miles warranty on the truck, and im at 90 k miles now.. its goin to the dealer this tuesday or wedensday!! first ill go to napa to see if i can get the old maf that was originally from the truck, hook it up, then zoom to the dealer and see if they cover my problems on the truck... plus! im supposed to go to ohio for my grandmas 70th birthday party on sept 15th.. hope the truck is done by then!... rant off!

p.s. i have no more rides! i borrowed my dads bronco 2.. sucks big time!

went to the dealer today... 2003 z71 is running on only 5 cylinder at upper rpm.. coil is good.. got dealer appt this thursday.. what does base on warranty paper means?? and i have 50 psi fuel pressure, my truck is supposedly be 55 to 62 psi.. will 50 psi make it lose power? i just hope they say my warranty will cover the truck... dohhh:doah: hope all is good.. wish me luck this thursday...

i bet it's the fuel pump.
 i betted it was the fuel pump too.. til i got the truck back from the chevy dealer, and they checked the fuel pump, its good, MAF good, every single thing good! until they checked the exhaust restriction. and had very very low amount coming out of the exhaust at upper rpm.. so the Catalytic converter was very very blocked on the pass side. they wanted to know when i want to get it fixed. i say heck no ill do it myself.. so paided 59 bucks for labor. not bad.. went straight home, got out my cut off wheel, made a little door on both converter bent it, cleaned out all of the crap that was in it. bent the door back up and fired her up it was LOUD.. so for a ride, i totally floored it, damn its alot better than when its off the dealer ship when me n my finacee bought it, it revved up all the way til like 5,800 n shifted fast n did the same, felt like a 80s camaro n firebird.. i was impressed. next day, this am went to my friends garage to get the door welded up.. i didnt want to weld it and have sparks coming all over me, so my friend did it, i asked him what do i owe him?? he say just stop by tmrw with a case of beer:bow: and we re even.. ill post up a pic of the doors i was talkin abt tmrw. thats it, im happy w the truck again, runs better than it did when we bought it.

i didnt want to buy a new y pipe, cause the new y pipe is 450 bucks.. no thanks

get a new cat. your truck has 4 O2 sensors. one in front of and one behind each cat. with one cat hollowed out it is gonna screw with the sensors and probably lead to further problems in the future. I take it you did not want them to do the work because it was not covered? the cat is covered for longer then anything else on the truck. something like 8 years.

its not covered.. both cat are hollow, i cleaned them both out.. and the truck runs better than new, i asked the chevy dealer abt if its empty will it hurt the truck they say no i asked the mechanic guy thats my friend he say no. he say engine light might come on due to lost of backpressures. once he finished welding the cat up for me, started the truck to check for leaks no engine light.. and runs great.. once engine light comes on ill check it out on the computer if its the o2 sensors ill get new cat..

they sell dummy sensors for what you are doing. it basically sends a signal telling the engine that everything is fine and the the cat is working.

after thinking about it more, it must be really loud if you think it is.

i dunno what u mean abt really loud.. all i know is when i cuted open the cat, and cleaned em out. it was very loud. then i closed it up, took it to my friends, welded it up. now its very quiet, my mechanic friend, (HEARING) say he cant even hear the truck aha. and the engine light was on when it was opened up. it went off after closed up.. ill give it time because it runs great.. as matter of fact my friend works at lube oil and he seens alot of the cat opened up and welded shut but the square cut in the cat.. so i assume those trucks have problems with them.

i'll have to keep that in mind if mine ever acts that way. i have 136k on mine.
and i will post up if my truck ever act funny, or engine lights comes on from hollowed cat.. so far it runs flawlessly.. 95 percent better than when i first got the truck off the used lot..

soon to be build thread..

update abt the wide open cats. truck runs flawlessly, i keep up with my friends stock 5.0 stang at take off til abt 70 then hes gone. not bad for a stock 4.8 erado lol. umm the update is engine service light came on last night, i got worried so at work today i hooked it up to the computer it was throwing codes for mass air flow(again:rolleyes: ) random misfire, and umm sensors getting different information for the exhaust.. the O2 i think. but truck runs great. and when u go upper rpm the misfire is gone, so i assume the maf is causing misfires. and possible from wide open cats:rolleyes: so Chas(gmc4cw) is right about computer getting wrong information. now in about 2 weeks i am gonna get 2 high flow cats and cut my out and put them in place then see what happens. my new plan is

1) get 4 new tires for my truck 265 75 16 general grabber at2
2) High flow catylic converter from napa.
3) K&N cold air kit
4) new MAF from summit, part number GRN-350115 what u think?
5) shorty headers from summit part number GIB-GP129 (worth it?)
6) computer reprogram kit from summit part number CRN-1202-003
7) new cat back exhaust sys. im thinkin flowmaster 50 series or gibson. with dual outlets..

if u think i can get something better or reliable, let me know! and what is worth it and what i dont need. thanks!

Cats: Get rid of em and run the plug in Sims, or look into some car sounds or random technologies models, I'd be wary of what you'll get at NAPA. Some of the replacement cats don't flow any better than stock.

Intake: Look into the Volant, with or without the external inlet tube. The K&N works too, but the oil thing worries me. AEM makes an oil-less one too.

Headers: There are full length models available if you've got some serious coin, otherwise, not sure about the different shorties. On my older rigs I've had great results with Edelbrocks TES. Whichever you choose, spend for the coated ones. Stainless if you can afford it.

Exhaust: I think I'm just going to change my muffler and add a tip to save money, the factory tubing is Stainless and mandrel bent.

MAF: Heard horror stories about running aftermarket ones, looks like you're looking at granetelli, I'm going to stick with my factory Delco unit.

Programmer: Check out the Diablosport Predator. Others are available, whichever you choose, make sure you have control of your torque management.

SLP has complete upgrade kits (as do some other mfg's), some include 1.8 RR's.

The gen III's respond really well to mods, I'm looking forward to adding some to mine. I'm just planning on the intake, tuner, and exhaust mods I mentioned above. The newer manifolds appear to be a much better flowing tubular design compared to the earlier generation of trucks. Mines a flexfuel 5.3, I'd like to get the programmer so I can take advantage of the higher octane properties of E85 (106 octane or so). I'm only at 13K, so I'm going to wait until I've got a few more miles on it before I add anything. The programmer is first on the list, I'd like to liven up my 4L60e and turn the torque management down a bit.

how does torque management works? can u explain it to me? thank you!

Get some of the spark plug fouling things from the Parts store. Drill out the hole to allow the 02 sensor to fit in it. Then install the 02 sensor with the fouler after the cat. This will keep it out of the main stream enough to keep the light from coming on. I had to do this for a while until I got a new set of cats.

If you want new cats I got mine from Hot Exhaust and it was cheaper to buy a new y pipe with the cats then have someone do the install. They look like the high flow type. If you tell them you work for AMD you will get an additional discount. I think it was around 240 for the y pipe with the cats. You will have to go to the dealer to get the metal seal for one of the mainfold connections that is about $10.
