2004 2500 Yukon XL - Hard brakes & No Steering

I checked it before leaving this morning and 3/4 mark on dipstick. Still can definitely hear the pump whine. I did a few more cycles of steering and pumping the brakes.

I drove it into work this morning....everything works well. Except there still is some whining. I'm hoping it will just settle down/quiet down.

I looked for decent, new pumps but most were just rebuilt Cardone ones. Not a lot of choices. Napa was also a rebuilt.

Well, the whine continued...and it was actually louder than the engine all the time!

Found an AC Delco new unit on Amazon and dropped that one in instead. Wow, much better and so much quieter!

I called Advance Auto and told them it was just way too loud....right out of the box. They said bring it back for a defective, full return. The store was a little iffy because they only want to do an exchange, but I said the online guy said "full refund". So they did it.

Lesson learned, get an AC Delco NEW one right off the bat. $102 new, or so. NO core charge either.

Ac Delco new, whenever available, for sure!

Glad you got it figured out.

Hope the newer style doesn't have that awful press fit pulley.

Still had to pull off and press on belt pulley....not too bad though (the second time around). :waytogo:

Removal is easy. I always struggle to install. The installer tool threads on the shaft in the pump always slip for me.....

Glad you got it handled.

Well, now after a week of driving, the pump is actually starting to get louder. No where near the loudness of the reman unit I replaced it with....but definitely starting to make a littke more noise.

I've flushed a gallon of Valvoline steering fluid between the two pump replacements, so the fluid is clean and new.

I've turned the wheel back and forth probably 20 times.....then jacked the front end up (to take weight off of wheels), and cycled another 20 times. The steering and brakes feel perfect. No isssues, so I don't think there is any air in there.

Is it possible the AC Delco is going bad? This is the only reason I don't like buying some of this stuff on Amazon, however I think replacing it again is pretty painless (except for me doing the install again.)

Ive had some new pump whine before and ran BG PS fluid and another time a ran Lucas PS fluid because changing the fluid was way easier than the pump again (3.8 GM and another one a Ford)

What's the condition of your belt and tensioner?

The belt is probably 6 months old and the tensioner is still original one...

If it were the tensioner, wouldn't it sound that way right off the bat? Not quiet initially, and then louder later on. Just seems more like a pump issue than a pulley/tension issue.

Well, I threw in another AC Delco pump and still have just a slight whine while driving. I flushed the fluid out and replaced with Lucas PS fluid with conditioners. No change. Drained out about 12 oz, and then added Lucas PS leak fix....still about the same. At this point, I guess I'm going to have to live with a slight noise. :(
