Is this the power steering pump going out or the Hydroboost unit?

Checked steering and brake fluid, both are fine.

My daughter was driving (luckily still in driveway) and she said the steering just got real hard and brakes equally hard.

I have an RPO code JH6

Have you tried it yourself yet? My wife, (bless her heart) was driving my '12 the other day and said when she was backing out of a parking spot and the brakes were hard and it was hard to steer. I have vac boost brakes. So I knew it wasn't a part failure. I said, is the truck running? She said, I think so? I said, what does the tach say? She said it's at zero. I said, put the truck in Park and start it. She did, and it started.... Wow! All the sudden, everything is better!

Funny...first thing I thought too! :haha:

So, yes I did try it (while running) and it's as hard as can be. Steering is almost impossible to turn unless I get the truck to move a little and I do have to really stand on the brakes to stop. Definitely something is bad!

Hydroboost brakes or vac boost? If it's hydro, and you are out steering and brakes, your steering pump probably isn't doing its job

Yes, they are hydroboost. I believe they went to hydro 2004 and newer.

I'm pointing at your pump.

I agree probably the pump, but don't forget to check the belt. Try the cheap simple things first........

Great, thank for the help! Looks like most are reman ones so I'll go ahead and change pump, hose and fluid change. So many things to do today.....

Thinking on these newfangled vehicles there's only one belt and they'd have noticed the lack of fan and alternator by now.

They also went to electric fans :haha: But yes, a broken serpentine belt would mean no water pump, alternator, power steering, power brakes or A/C.

Dang newfangled cars. Next you're gonna tell me they don't have carburetors?

At least this 2004 is "doable" for repair. Still has some electronics but manageable. I can't imagine trying to diagnose/work on a new 2013/2014 truck. So many electronic dodads......

I got the parts but truck is parked until tonight (hopefully). At least the blazer is working well!

Well, you have to be awake enough to find the year of the vehicle when posting.............
Especially when its in the freaking title!!!!

Sleep posting at its best........

One thing.....

Is a new, high pressure hose really necessary or should I just keep the old one and install pump only?

Certainly not necessary. But a good idea.

Got it all changed out and probably the hardest part was getting the pump out. I decided to go down and out through the skid plate.

Flushed it all out and everything works as it should. I am glad I got a new hose because it just made it easier going back together again....and much better chance of not getting any dirt or contaminants into the system.

So, I've filled and turned the wheels side to side. Tested the brakes and then re-filled. Turned and drove around just a little bit in driveway and everything works.....

However, the pump sure does whine a lot. Much louder than the old pump! It's dark now so I could be slightly low on the fluid but I think it's at least above the low mark. Am I just still a little low or is this thing going to be that loud??:dunno:

I've heard a bazillion different ways to bleed the steering system. There's a PDF floating around here if you search for it.

This is what I've done on my hydroboost swaps and I've had good luck:

Leave the motor off to begin with.

Fill the system to the line on the filler cap. I leave the filler cap off and put a length of old heater hose on that has the right ID to fit onto my reservoir. You may have to just leave the cap loose and drape a rag over it -- fluid will spray everywhere if you don't.

Jack the front end up so the tires are off the ground.

Turn the steering wheel back and forth, say 10 cycles, then do another 10 cycles with your foot on the brake. This will bleed the hydrobooster as well as the steering box. Might check fluid level halfway through as it can go surprisingly low quickly. Don't push it right at the ends as that makes the pump work extra hard, be gentle when you're close to the stops. At least since the tires are off the ground it's easy enough to wiggle.

Once done, check fluid level one more time, then cap it, start the motor real quick, and do the back-n-forth again. Turn it off, check the fluid level, then turn motor on and do the brake + back-n-forth.

May be overkill :dunno: but works for me. As mentioned, once the pump gets aerated you gotta turn it off and wait what seems like forever for the fluid to un-foam and then start all over, so doing it in steps helps.
