Hey guys,

Im going to go look at a 2004 1500 this weekend, it has the 4.8L v8, auto, 4x4, 48000 miles, anything to look for, never owned anything this new before.

Thanks JJ

If your looking for a get around truck nothing wrong with the 4.8

Honestly, not much to look for besides the obvious. Coolant level, oil change records.
Typically don't see those trucks till after 100k

Looked at a 05 for my dad this morning, but it was 2wd.

Well I like the truck but me and the girlfriend think she may be pregnant so I got too scared knowing that to sign the paperwork on it. It is cherry though. Summit white, brush Baird, its nice as all heck, bit as stated, kid on the way, a loan payment goes a long way.

congrats on the kid... did u get the truck?
any pics?

i have an '08 and almost bought an extended cab with the 4.8 but ended up with a crew cab short box with 5.3...
my 5.3 gets me 18mpg going 60 miles each way to work as it shuts half the motor down on the highway... @ 75mph
did a trip to NC outter banks and got 19.75mpg as didnt really go over 55mph...

i still see nothing wrong with the 4.8.. my bro in law had one.. but he now has a 2011 camaro ss

Nah i didn't get it. I figured a loan payment can go a long way with buying the kids stuff.

Holy cow! I think at that point I'd buy an old worn out beater honda :eek1:

What powertrain do you have in the Z71?

wife and i talked about it. i could drive something i hate just for gas mileage.. or i can drive what im comfortable in... i now make $15k a year more and that is not including the $7k+ bonus i should get.. so i think i can afford gas....

oh z-71 has 5.3L that shuts half motor off on the highway... automatic trans (not sure on trans and axle gearing)...

$15k and a bonus, nice work

Need any work done to the house  :haha:

Does the tranny have overdrive? If so, it's a 4L80e, if not then it's probably a 4L60e.

Axle gearing should be printed inside the glovebox. Not that it is important unless you upsized your tires.

That is a nice feature for highway travel, I was curious to know because it seemed like the 6.0 was available for the Z71 package in 07/08, but I could be wrong. Imagine that fuel cost :doah:

dont mind hijacking as he didnt get the truck...

yes OD...

i believe the 6.0 was available but i didnt want that fuel bill...

however i still want a duramax....

gearing.. havent looked yet.. but will as im at 45k miles now (120 a day is making it climb up) but at 100k out of warranty and getting lifted and bigger tires... unless that will kill my mileage... if so then no way....

That body style looks extra awesome lifted with big rubber :thumb:

Yeah, my k2500 has the LQ9 6.0, oh it's sweet, but I got it right before the market decided to take a nose dive :doah:

I get around 12-14 highway, 4L60e, 4.10, on 33s aggressive treads, before the bigger rubber I got a little better mileage, maybe a mile or two more.

Not bad at all :thumb:

Actually, I was just talking to a guy that only gets 16mpg outta his TJ with a 4.0 and a manual tranny. I can't wait to tell him about your gas mileage.

I could do better, but I love the skinny pedal waaaay to much :pimp:

These tires have hurt the mpgs a bit, but they have been excellent in the snow, rain, and mud :thumb:

...my 99 Z71 has 225k miles, still going strong. got it with 185 on the clock in 07, it has only needed a few little things. (fuel pressure regulator, o2 sensors, front wheel hubs). The 4.8 is a great little motor, I have come to respect it. However, when it goes, I'll be dropping a 5.3 in it.

I get 19 on the long trips, with the taigate down. :waytogo:

I would have been happy with this motor in my old 79 Z-28!

fwiw, I ran a tank of Seafoam through it this week...feels quite a bit stronger, quicker off the line. 48k miles is nothing on these motors.

The 4.8 is an awesome motor, but how does it feel when towing?
