2004 suburban with np243 case. Ready to swap it

I've searched around but I can't find any definitive info.
I have an np243 behind a 4l60e and I want to ditch it and run a manual shift np241 (drivers drop) with a jb cable shifter (eliminating linkage issues)

I really don't want to argue the merits of the 243. I hate it. It's left me stranded and IMO way too complicated with its actuator motor and tccm.

I have several issues I want to figure out before gathering parts:

What year 241 should I look for?

Should I have my ecm flashed as a 2wd to eliminate CEL?

Will I need to swap inputs?

Can I use a Posi lock cable?

Any help is appreciated. I love this burb but I want to know when it's in 4x4
 
Are there really any issues with the stock manual shifters?

AFAIK all (GM at least) VSS equipped 241's use the same reluctor setup. No idea when the drivers drop VSS started, but if it's drivers drop and VSS, it should be what you need.

I don't think I'd open up the reflashing can of worms if the 241 drivers drop has the same VSS output as the 243.

If the 241 can be had with the proper input after X year, then I'd expect that's also what you'd want to find.

As an aside, unless there is a reason you can't, I'd go with the stock 241 shifter too. Not a huge fan of cable shifters except where there is no option. They might be smoother, but does it have the "gated" function of the stock setup, and is it necessary for the cost?
 
Your PCM doesn't care what t-case is installed. It just wants to know when the vehicle is in low range to adjust the shift pattern of the transmission and the speedometer indication accordingly.

The NP241 and NP243 are nearly identical mechanically speaking. One just has a manual shifter and the other has a push button shift system. They are dimensionally pretty much the same.

If you un-plug the TCCM you shouldn't get any warnings on the DIC to service the 4wd assembly. The BCM doesn't actively seek it out but will relay warnings to the instrument cluster if they are requested by the TCCM.

I'd also recommend a mechanical rod type shifter linkage if possible. They hook up easily and are more durable than cable shifters are.
 
I never really considered a 241 shifter because of the larger hole. I've used my jb shifter in my buggy (also a 241 ) with great success zero problems. It only requires a hole drilled to pass the cable through.

That being said. If I find a shifter when i procure a 241... I will use it. :)

And I guess I will just unplug the tccm when I swap cases.

Any other considerations? Thank you guys who posted. I'm definitely willing to listen
