I don't know exactly what goes on but I see it a lot at the shop. Most of the time it goes away on its own. I think it may be an actuator sticking and it kicks a light on, but I'm not sure. If you have a good shop that has a scanner you like to goto, they can scan it and read the code that popped up in the transfer case.

Well on the scanner it will come up under the transfer case, where you select, engine, trans, ABS, air bag, transfer case.

My dad has issues with his 2003 and that coming on. Especially when it is needed. I put it on the scanner and the light went off and everything worked. Try letting it sit for a little while, and then try switching the 4wd buttons while in neutral. It may clear up itself.

Most of the time that I see it it is a bad 4wd switch. I have also run into the transfer case shift solenoid assembly causing this.

Mine does that once in a while, everything works as it should so I don`t worry about it.Had it since new 02 duramax

This..

MIne does this on occasion.. I use the 4x4 plenty and it is not affecting any function thus far.

This happend to both my parent's vehicles and my grandfather's truck.

On all of then it wound up being a problem with the position sensor in the transfer case compounded by programming problems. Before you replace anything have the t-case programming updated by gm. If that does not fix it you can test the switch by trading it with a truck that has a good switch and makng sure that your switch works in their truck. If the switch is good and the programming has been updated the next step is to replace the position sensor in the tcase. Doing so is a real pain in the butt but can be done by yourself with basic hand tools.

One major issue that can arise out of this is that the tcase does not default to 2wd when the selector system screws up. When dad's truck's failed the tcase was in low range and refused to switch back to high range. The front axle wasn't locked in but his speed was definitely limited. This is why I specifically bought a truck with a manual transfer case, haha

I don't remember the details....so take it as just something you might want to check.
My fathers 06 3500 4x4 has gone through 2 front wheel hubs. Don't remember if it was the ABS or 4x4 light that would come on, but the steering the braking was affected, so might not be your case.

If he needed front bearings the the ABS light was should have been on.
