2020 gm 4500 hd HP front axle

Definitely. I have a big truck junkyard here that has lots of awesome finds. Someone somewhere is gonna tip over a 4x4 bucket truck. And I'll buy the axles lol

I saw a 2011 GMC 2500 HD rear axle the other day at my friends shop, waiting to be installed..

THAT THING IS MASSIVE!..
I looked at it,and asked him "you have a dually dump truck or some huge truck to put that thing in "?..

"Nope--it's for a 2011 2500 HD--I too wonder if the salvage yard sent me the right one--look at it--no markings on it (most used parts have that yellow paint marker ID'ing what it came off),and the disc brake calipers are HUGE too...the axle tubes look to be 4" in diameter at least too!..the center section looks like a typical 14 bolt though.it has a finned casting on the drive shaft side..thing looks like it weighs 600 lbs ..

I looked at it and said "how the hell could anyone wear something this "overkill" out under a 3/4 or 1 ton truck ?...they run it without gear oil "?.

He replied "All I know is the one still in the truck must have wiped the pinion bearings out,I could move the driveshaft up & down a lot and it was leaking at the seal"...:ooo:

International Terrastar 4x4
Front-driving axle: Dana Spicer 70-273 single reduction, 8,000-lb. capacity, on 8,000-lb. parabolic, taper leafs

@Larry do you know if the GM is on a Navistar chassis?

Terrastar Dana 70 on top picture definitely bigger.

Pretty sure the passenger drop Dana 70 is not in the new International. The new ones that I have seen have the same driver drop Dana 60 and the Meritor 3203 transfer case as the GM. The International and the GM 4500, 5500. and 6500 are basically the same except cosmetics. The older International with the passenger drop Dana 70 used the NV271/273 transfer case early and the later ones had the Fabco TC-28.

I think the new Dana 60 is actually stronger than the HP Dana 70. The 70 has the small 29 spline pinion and the new 60 has the bigger 28 spline pinion. The ring gear is about 1/2" smaller but I think the small pinion will break before the ring and pinion teeth fail.

Local dealer has a couple 4x4 6500's now, among other things. They seem to be set up the same as a 5500, same spring packs, axles, etc. The only difference I noticed is the 6500 I looked at had rear shocks, a front sway bar and the front tires were a highway tread. Only 22K gvw I think it was.

Yeah the couple videos I watched showed that they were all(4500,5500,6500) pretty light on the gvwr. I think the one difference I saw if I remember correctly was that there were different Allison trans options for the 6500. It also might have the 70 front but I'm not sure on that. Either way I want one with a flatbed for my daily.

The guy I talked to who drove the truck said it was weak as hell and should have just got a 1 ton.

I've driven a lot of the older van-cabbed trucks with an empty flat bed, I still would like one of the new ones as a daily.
Thats what I've mostly driven. We had one we called the donkey puncher.
Because after driving it felt your kidneys had been punched by a donkey.

So the 4500/5500 are both the Allison 1000, same as the 3500 pickups?

Be interested in what options are available for the 6500.

We've got an '03, '05, and an '07 4500. There's also '05 and '06 5500's and 3 '09 6500's. The '06 and '09s are crew cabs, the others are singles of various wheel bases. There have been others that are gone now. I've put a lot of miles on all of them and most have been my DD at some point in time. They all ride good enough for me, except that damn '03. Something about the spring rate on that one, the ride is miserable. It's weird because the springs are visually the same as the other 4500's.

i have seen them 03-09 4500-6500 with air or fixed seat . i my self have driven both and fixed seat is a lot worse .

It's funny you mention that. I absolutely hate the air seats, lol. I'll take the standard seat any day because they have a lot more padding in them. Everyone has different tastes I guess.

This is my '09 crew cab company truck, it has the air seat. About a month ago, I couldn't take it anymore, so I took apart the seat bottom and stuffed a 2" layer of additional foam in there. It looks all poofy and weird, but it's somewhat comfy now.

air seat sucked if the lever was not flipped to let it swing front to back with the air up and down .
