I have an 86 Jimmy (305, sm465, np208) and I want to install the np205. I know the tranny output will be different but thats not a problem. My question is about the drive shafts and cross member.

The transfer case is from a 72 Blazer as are the drive shafts and cross member.
I also have the original drive shafts and cross member for the 86.

What would have to be done to have the 205 work in my truck?

Thanks for the help!

me thinks you can use the figure 8 adapter with the 32 spline long input in your fig 8 205.
maybe.

The input shaft going in to the 205 is 10 spline.... Connecting the transfer case to the transmission isn't the problem. The problem, or question, is will I be able to use the drive shafts and cross member from either the '72 or '86 truck or will I need different drive shafts and a different crossmember.

I took some measurements and it seems to me that although the sm465/np205 is a bit shorter than the sm465/208, a rear drive shaft from the '72 will work. The front Im not sure about and the cross member is also in question.

If need be, I can fab a new cross member but Im busy with a bunch of other things and would like the swap to be as quick as possible... in other words- bolt on.

thanks obijuan for responding though

your sm465 though is 32 spline.
both 465/205 adapters figure8 and round are 10 inches long.
take a 32 spline figure 8 case(easier to find) and put a long input gear in it.
use the pre 85 flat crossmember, your 72 205(machined to fit the large bearing)

then put a slip yoke on the 205 and your 86 driveshaft will work.

i think youre making it complicated

I should have mentioned everything....
The sm465 also needed to be changed over because it had a cracked case. So I have a sm465from a 72 but since it has a 10spline output, I dont want to go through the work of changing out the mainshaft to the 32 spline. If I dont change it over, I can use the np205 that I would prefer anyway.
So basically, the 465/208 from the 86 is out and I have a 72 truck with a 465/205 that I can pull out and swap it into the 86... The rear driveshaft should work, but I dont know about the front and crossmember

...sorry for the confusion

likely you need new shafts. and the crossmember pronbably wont work.
get second gen specific parts for your second gen.

Second gen parts? I know the second gen rear shaft is way too short. But the rear shaft from the 72 should work. The front shaft is a little short but it seems like its only short by about an inch so maybe it work...? The cross member from the 86, looks like its going to be too tall for the 72 trans/tranny
I have a feeling that if Im going to use the 72 setup Ill have to fab a crossmember and possibly get a front shaft

I went thru that a few years ago, i had a 465/208 and wanted to swap in a 205. What i did was find a truck with a 205 in the junkyard and take all the parts. Then i had the 10 spline trans shaft and the tcase bolted right up to the adapter. I know that the 32 spline is better but had no luck with that. I used the hydro bell from the 208 and the crossmember from the 205. Shafts i had to get, lengthened or shortened.

Sounds like the only problem will be the drive shafts. I thought the rear shaft would work and I might have a problem with the front shaft..... dont really have time or the money right now for modified shafts

Well thanks guys
