I purchased an NP205 with the 10 spline input to rebuild and turn into a 32 spline case for my doubler project. When I got it home and started running it through its gears I noticed that the input shaft slides out about 3/8 of an inch. it still turns when the shaft is slid out but makes an odd grinding sound. What problem do I have here if any? Thanks guys!

Do you have the adapter on it? If not, the bearing will not be retained to the case, therefore allowing the input shaft to "walk" out.

no

No there is no adapter installed just the plane jane np205 case. So this thing sliding out a little ways is normal???

the input bearing should have a big clip that keeps it from falling in to the case. the clip and bearring is sandwiched between the adapter and the case in the grove of the adapter see the pic
when you pull it forward the gear inside is probably rubbing the inside of the case
