205 Output housing mod 4L80E

So any way to connect the speedometer/odometer up in an 8.1/4L80E/205 in a '72 K5 with stock speedometer?

I assume you need an electrical signal for the computer? If so, I believe Painless Wiring makes a manual to electric converter.

I have to do this mod to my tail housing. Anyone know where I can purchase a np241 40 tooth reluctor ring? My town has ZERO u pull it lots--which sucks! I tried online but I guess its not something people really ever have to buy. I was able to grab the pickup sensor before I left New Orleans at the junk yard.

How much is the original 1991 one year only 205 tone ring with to yah?? I got one at a dealership years ago for a project. Now it's stuffed in my toolbox just sitting there.

I am putting the same setup that you have in my 74 K5. I picked up a cluster from a 91 suburban and it has the electric speedo. Not sure how it would fit your 72. If you wanted to use your stock cable driven speedo, it looks like the jags that run sensor might retain the cable. Also , I modified two NP205 output housings for the 241 sensors. The first one I did, I didnt drill the hole for the sensor perfeclty perpindicular to the output shaft, but I am sure it would still work, if anybody wants it. I was told it isnt as critical as some think.

do you have the tail housing and sensor? If not then nothing...

I wish I had the tailhousing. The sensor is nothing, same as the 241 and what not. The tone ring for the 205 is a little thinner than off a 241. I was gonna do this to something I had, that was so many projects ago, can't remember....

I haven't started working on mine yet - got a complete 241 with my 4L80E - so going to rob parts off there.

Haven't dived into it, but hoping to find a way to keep mechanical speedo & install tone ring as well. (Maybe take each gear and make shorter?)

I haven't been in my t-case in two years, so not remember how it looks like in there...

Not a bad idea. The tone ring would have to be very narrow, but it might work. I dont have a plastic gear to look at for reference. Just move the sensor hole out towards the bearing retainer, and cut the tone ring down to .125 approximately. If you need help let me know. I made a fixture to hold the output housing in my bridgeport, and I have the drill and tap for the sensor.

the plastic gear has a lip on the end's for spacing could cut 1 lip off and sanwich the tone ring in .

you can just see the lip. and might be able to also trim down the tooth section a bit and not hit the area for the drivin gear to the cable out.

I'm going to throw a wrench into the works here and say the lip on the nylon speedo gear is there for proper spacing; I have several of the early NP205's with the un-splined output shaft, and of course un-splined steel speedo gear. The preload one the rear yoke nut is what makes the gear stay in place on the shaft.
I'll post up a pic in a couple days when I get back to the shop.

It would be tight. The sensor diameter at the tip is .650". It would have to be right up against the bearing. I cant remember if the bearing sits all the way down in that bore or not, but if it does you would need the tone ring to be at least .325" thick. Might be too much material to remove from the plastic gear and have it still work.

The gears I have seen are all splined, so this isnt a concern. Not saying that the unsplined versions dont exist. Just that there are splined ones out there.

This has helped me quite a bit on my quest to get a 205 behind my LQ4/4L80E that I thought this might belong here. The salvage yard wouldnt sell me the gear out of a broken case, they wanted to get core price for the entire thing. So I called the stealership for a price on a 241 tone ring. $27 later I had one on the way. Here's a pic of the ring with the part number. Fits the 205 shaft splines beautifully.

Are all VSS's the same? I was planning on using the one out of my auto track case. I priced one for the same 241 that this ring came from. Almost $200.

You realize you're gonna have to narrow that gear a bit to fit the 205?

Yessir. The 205 part wasnt in their system, so I bought a 241 ring per MEK5's excellent write up on here. I've got a good friend who works in a machine shop.

On a somewhat related note, this is a 205 I bought from you. I drove up to Kansas to pick it up a few years ago. I'm finally getting around to doing something with it.
