24 KARAT

1978 Y88 Trans Am Special Gold Edition
Sorry for the late updates. I received the restored dash bezel just before BB20 and got some pics.

The first set of pics are what it looks like after years of fading from the sun and heat. It should have a gold luster/shine to it but it's gone....except for what the plastic rings hide.

He sands and removes the swirl pattern and all blemishes

Then he has machinery that puts the swirl pattern back, anodizes it with gold then clear coat. Paints all the rings and trim then reassembles.

Randy Combs is the restorer and he does excellent work.

I forgot about those dashes w/ the machined faces. Always thought it was cool in my uncles car.

Time for some updates:

I sent the dash to Al Knoch interiors to have it recovered. It took 6 months to get it back but they did a great job. Looks brand new.

I bought a new OER console from Restore-a-Muscle Car. Comes in black but it will be painted to match the rest of the interior.

I got the front seat covers and door panels from Legendary Auto Interiors. Only took 9 months to get them. The rear seat covers should be here by the end of September.

Everything, except the under dash wiring, has been removed from the body. I built a wooden frame and installed wheel dollies, on each corner, to set the body on and make it easy to roll it around and work on.

The passenger side floor section needed more work than I thought. At first I thought it was just surface rust.....But I could see pin holes with the light underneath. So that section got replaced. A small area on the firewall, just above the floor patch, didn't have any rust-through but still needed sanded down and treated.

Once the floor was finished I took it outside to media blast the underneath. It was 107 degrees that day.

I had to repair four sections of the rear quarter panels. Two on each side. In front of and behind the rear tire. A common place for rust repairs on these F bodies.

A previous owner had attempted to do these repairs but failed miserably.

All patch panels welded in and ready for bodywork.

Never seen this before. Cool build. Any pictures of the previous cars?

Were all of the Y88 cars Fisher t-tops? I would assume so.

Martin

Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of the other Trans Ams. They were lost on the computer that crashed.

All Y88's had the Fisher t-tops.

Finished the rear axle assembly.

Stainless Steel brake lines will be here tomorrow so I can get those installed and start working on the front suspension.

Leaf springs were re-arched to factory specs. They were out of spec by 1/2". Not bad for 44 years old and 79,000 miles on them.

This Y88 came with 3:42 gears.

The rear end gear was determined by the engine and transmission combinations. So, if you got the L78 automatic, it was a 2.56 rear end. If you got the W72 4-Speed, it was the 3.42 rear end. If you got the W72 automatic, then is was the 3.23 rear end.

Time for some updates...................

Engine and transmission are in.

Engine was rebuilt by Len Williams, in Bristow Oklahoma. He has been rebuilding pontiac engines for a couple of decades. He did his magic and gave this pontiac 400 about 400-425 HP. Stock it was about 230-240 HP.

I rebuilt the borg warner super t-10 4 speed transmission and anything else that needed a rebuild or refurbished.
