I have an 89 K5 with a NP241. I have some vibration in my driveline and it is coming from the rear output of my transfer case. I am going to replace the bearing, bushing, and seal as a temporary fix and I was wondering if anyone has a bearing #. I don't know if it makes a difference but my truck has a mechanical speedometer.

Thanks for the help,
Tim

It's a good chance you just have a bad U-joint. The t-case should only have a bushing in the tail housing that the slip yoke rides in. I would start by pulling the driveshaft and carefully inspecting the U-joints on BOTH ends of the shaft.

I replaced the joints and had the local driveline shop check my drive shaft. Everything was OK.

Thanks,
Tim

Has this problem just surfaced or did you just buy this rig and had this problem? Also how much lift is on the rig? When lifting the rig you need to address the U-joint working angle or you'll end up with a vibration that won't go away.

I have had the truck with the same lift on it for about 8 years. The vibration sounded like a u joint at first but got worse. With the drive shaft removed I can feel some slack in the output shaft when I push it up and down or side to side.

Thanks,
Tim

With the rear shaft removed you will be able to move the output shaft around pretty good. You said you installed new U-joints in the shaft, how long ago or how many miles are on them? Did it JUST get done and have just a few miles or was it a year ago? The reason i ask is lots of people say they replaced something only to find out it was a year or more ago. Did you grease the new U-joints after you installed them?

I'm just trying to gather all the info i can to try and help you.

The truck has about 20 miles on it since I replaced the joints and they are sealed joints. It has been maybe a week since I replaced the joints and the new joints were in when the driveline shop checked the drive shaft.

Thanks,
Tim

What did the driveline shop check? Did they check it for being in balance? If you changed the U-joints yourself did you index the from slip yoke so that it was installed the same way it came off? If you flip the yoke 180* you can cause the shaft to be out of balance and cause a vibration.

How about the rear end, does it have any play in it? It can have a little rotational play but it should have no side-to-side or in/out play.

If the rear end is good you can probably blame the t-case.

There aren't many people on here that will have the part #'s for you, I would just ask a good driveline shop (I use one out here that mostly does tractor trailer stuff but carries every Spicer and Timken part you could imagine).

They checked the "ears" of the shaft to make sure a cap was not spinning and they checked to make sure it was balanced. I always mark drive shafts when I replace joints.

Thanks,
Tim

Ok, then it sounds like you can rule out the driveshaft as being your problem. Now, what about the t-case mount? Those can become mushy when they get old and create a vibration.

The rear is tight. I went through it in November. The only play I can find is the output shaft of the t case.

Thanks,
Tim

I replace the trans mount with a poly mount in Oct. 07 when I replace the engine and engine mounts. I took a look at it and see not problems.

Thanks,
Tim

Not related to your original question but when you replaced the trans mount with a poly mount did you also replace the engine mounts with poly as well? If not you're going to break the tranny case or the t-case.

You may pull the rear cone off and see if you have broken the C clip that snugs against the rear bearing. Common problem. The broken clip allows the shaft to "walk", which causes uncommon wear on the bearing, chain, range fork, etc. It's an odd size, and the dealer wants a kidney for it ($8 IIRC). I have a couple extra I'll drop in the mail for you if you need one.
