241 v.s. 208

TBI vehicles never start up nice. I hate TBI with a passion.

208s leak at the case halves, rear slip yoke, front yoke, you name it, anywhere there's a hole, they leak.

Hey thats not nice! I love my TBI, its starts up fine and stays running on the steepest of obstacles and it never stalls when I bounce the bejesus out of it on the woopdedos! My 208 doesnt leak AT ALL unless I pull the driveshaft out.

Yes the 241 have helical and they also have 6 plants in the carrier where the 208 has only 4 plants. I do believe that the 241 is stronger than the 208.

Looks like the big difference between the two is the 241 planetary assembly has a six pinion carrier while the 208 only has a four pinion carrier. I remember a mag article which made a big deal about this, comparing a 231's 3 pinion rated for 600 ft lbs to the 241's 6 pinion rated for 1400 ft lbs. I assume the 208's 4 pinion would fall in between. Don't know about chain width.

I know (*almost allways read as "I'm pretty darn sure"*) the 241 has a better oil pump.

I'm not sure about the planatairy set up.

As far as I know, the 241 are/were availibe as right hand drives (solid axle) after '89 or '90 - Not sure tho'. Some have electric speed sensors, some are cable - Again, not sure.

my brother has a 90 something Z71 with like 110+K hard miles and his tbi starts up nicely. the 350 with a flowmaster roars to life with authority after about 2 revolutions.. everytime. You sure have some wierd likes and dislikes, tim.

I have heard the oiling deal, but didn't know about the planetary gears. Interesting.

I believe the 1988 and maybe 89 cases were cable case... 90 and up were electric I believe.

Mike my carb motor starts up in less than a half a turn. If you dont believe me ask Robzilla. Mine all you need to do is barely tap the key and it starts.

mine takes about 2 cranks to get there; starts extremely easy, but is seems to take just a minute for the fuel to start flowing. always starts up the same way everytime - no less turns or no more turns of the starter (cold or hot - and believe me I got plenty of cold here! /forums/images/icons/tongue.gif.)

"Mike my carb motor starts up in less than a half a turn. If you dont believe me ask Robzilla. Mine all you need to do is barely tap the key and it starts. "

Exactly. If my motor doesn't start the first time around, I will be investigating what is wrong. Even when it's cold it will start the first hit of the key every time if the choke is closed.

I have been installing a TBI motor all week at school. It starts like crap IMO. The throttle body and all that stuff have 300,000 miles on them, but I've never been impressed by the way TBI engines start.

I don't have weird likes or dislikes, I just figure if you're going to have a computer to control your engine, it needs to be smarter than the TBI computer. The TBI computer is like the Forrest Gump of fuel injection. At least OBD II fuel injections will tell you more of what's wrong with them when they act up.

My '89, with TBI, always starts instantly, and my 241 doesn't leak anywhere. Mine must be the exception, eh? Too bad too because a 205 is replacing my 241 very soon (a TH400 is replacing my POS 700R4 also).

FYI - The stock 241 in my '89 uses a mechanical speedo. The '90 and '91 use an electronic speedo (called VSS I think). I don't know about the gear cuts but I can say the gears are relatively quiet in low range...very little or no gear whine.

I don't recall the '208 even having an oil pump. That is the main advantage of the '241, pressurized lube system. The oil pump is driven by the output shaft, so towing in neutral won't hurt the 'case.

I plan on swapping in a '241 into my sub. Thats becaue my gear vendors was for a '241 case. And it's cheaper to swap cases out than buy new adapters.

The 89' 241 came with the right hand drives as well...pretty rare breed of 241's from what' I've "heard".
My 241 does leak a little though, but not enough to make me go mad...my old 205 in my old truck had a small leak when I put ATF in there (was testing it out)....but went back to gear oil and no leak...ATF will find some leaks for yah if you have em....
Anyhow, off the 241 vs. 208 subject, but my TBI has never given me any problems...close to 130K miles...but I do plan on swapping in a TPI 383 in the near future...:)

Hey Mark, what are you going to do with the 241 once you take it out? I might be interested in buying it from you. I also live in the S/F bay area. If you want to sell it how much $ we talking? It never hurts to have a backup case or something to even experiment with.

I've got a 208, and mine pees all over the place. The yoke, the seam...everywhere. It isn't bad enough to where I have to keep refilling it all the time, but it is noticeable. Personally...my dream is to mate a 205 or 203 up to an 4500 or 5600 (got a 700r4 now) And yes, I've heard of the 241 being an "upgraded" (bs) 208. Their both weak, but they're both cheap to work on and lightweight enough to curl.

I may keep the 241 for another project. I'll keep you in mind if I decide to sell it. You are the third person to express interest.
