292 for crawling?

The "Camel Humper"250 I-6 in my 79 C-10 bonanza had a 2 bbl "vari-jet(I called it very-junk!)that would always lay an egg when you tried to take off from a stop sign.I tried rebuilding it,new accelerator pump,etc--nothing helped. So I got mad and with the help of a machine shop for 25 bucks they helped me make an adaptor that converts the var-jet patteren to square bore 4 bbl.It now has a 600 cfm edelbrock on it--I dissconnected the secondaries because it goes just fine on the 2 primaries. It looks kinda goofy(wish I had a digital camera and knew how to use it--I'd show ya!)but it is mounted so that the primary barrels (the front of the carb)is pointing towards the drivers side fender. The weird thing is the fuel line, choke, and throttle linkage are in the same place as the stock carb.I did have to extend the throttle and detent cables, but it wasnt that hard. Now it takes off like a rocket, has much better drivability, even gets 15+mpg!!~.The only drawback is the adaptor keeps any heat from getting to the carb--great in summer, but I had carb icing problems last winter,so I had to use drygas--but I dont use it much in colder weather anyway. Now if I want I can put ANY 2 or 4 barrel on it with the help of a mr.gasket carb adaptor.I may put a holley economaster 2 bbl on it--I have one on the 307 in my van and it gets great mileage.I saved all my stock carb and air cleaner just in case it didnt work out--but I love the way it runs now--its no big block, but the tourque comes in just past idle, like my 6.2,and the truck pulls really well. All in all I like the inline motors, though the camelback isnt chevys best. The 292 is the best for tourque, but they drink just like a V8 at the gas pump.Tough as nails though, and super easy to work on!. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

you need Leo Santuci's book (can't think of the title, but you can find it on amazon or over at www.inliners.org)

According to him, a 292 bored .30 over, with a cam and 4 barrel intake & carb=343 hp

If you wanted to run racing gas only, you could go .60 over, cam and 4-barrel and get 600+

parts are expensive for the I6's though

Santuci's book is a GREAT source of knowledge !
I think the 292's with those power numbers are heavily modified with welded together SBC heads or extreme head work on the stock GM head - either which way they have produced some crazy numbers from an in-line motor and they remained streetable for the most part.
I read that most of the circle track racers protested the in-line six cylinders because of how well/hard/strong they pulled out of the corners and onto the straight-a-ways .
As said above parts ain't cheap ! I have spent WAY to much money on this motor but it will do what I want so I just suck it up knowing that it will be a realible engine that will last for a very long while .

I second the vote, for that book, for anyone who wants to learn more about GM six cylinders. The tittle is "Cheverolet Inline Six-Cylinder Power Manual" and it is put out by California Bill's Automotive Handbooks . It is very good reading !

but nothin' beats big cubic inches and big torque and horsepower. big block 500 caddy, bored .030 over, with ford 460fuel injection, soon going to gm 8.1 vortech fuel injection /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif /forums/images/graemlins/hack.gif /forums/images/graemlins/weld.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grind.gif on the same note, I love seeing guys doing stuff like you are! there is always a better way!

I know that displacement is rad, and huge torque is fun. I just like the straights for what they are, not powerhouses but good motors. I have 2 Buick small blocks, 455, SBC, and I want a 292 aswell. Aslong as it's a proven GM product I'm interested. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif Oh and pauly tigers are cool, I just won a Tony the Tiger stuffy! /forums/images/graemlins/histerical.gif
