2insane’s Random 6.2/6.5 Diesel Projects

I went to the junkyard today after work and found a 6.5 truck getting ready to be crushed. I salvaged what I could and will try to go back to get more. I was sad to see someone sawed off the turbo and messed up the exhaust manifold turbo drain and oil feed tube. :-( I asked the owner to hold off crushing it for awhile. The ESS Gear Drive was icing on the cake.

Great score on the Banks work truck!

Thanks for the ATS pictures. I have never seen anything more than just an under hood shot before.

Yeah I thought it was a lucky find for only $5000. I think the PO did not know how to take care of it very well and gave up on it.

I’ll get A LOT more pics of the ATS system soon. Undercarriage, glow plug access, turbo specs, frame clearance as well. I think there are quite a few V band upgrades that would work if the down pipe is rebuilt or a new one made for a V band. Either way I will make it work and share the knowledge.

To note: The main complaints I ever hear and read about is the ATS system has a laggy turbo and gets boost leaks fairly easy with only 2 bolts holding the plenums together. I have read that they can do 15 psi boost but will easily blow gaskets and couplers once it gets in the 10-12 psi range.

Here is the other thread with the ATS turbo, it starts at page 39 and ends with my pictures on page 61.
I guess I remember wrong, I do have a plug in the intake bottom.
I will post the pictures I have of the parts from the ATS install I did.

Thanks! Looks like your build has the most ATS pictures in the world! Lol!

Yesterday I got started on refurbishing the 6.5 OEM fuel filter assembly. It is a lot cheaper to keep the OEM filter assembly then order something else with a water in fuel sensor and fuel heater. New O-rings, a wire brush with soap and water, along with a new filter goes a long way! The pre screen filter looked crappy so just waiting for a new one to show up before completing it.
The Fuel Heater O-Ring and Water in fuel O-Ring was hard to find separately.

Here’s info I collected.

I didn't realize how much that filter does.
I have now 2 vehicles I am parting with the 6.5 TD, a 92 mechanical and a 94 electronic, and both have this filter.
I guess I am keeping them.

The fuel heater alone is a great mod. It can also be swapped over to a 6.2 diesel as well. The only issue is those seals do tend to leak overtime if not properly maintained and sediment settles at the bottom which needs to be sucked up every time the filter is replaced. It is a lot cheaper and efficient to just rebuild it I think.

My step son and I got the motor out of the customers C10 truck. He was proud of all the hard work he did and wanted a picture of himself in front of it. It took us about 6 hours to get it out which included labeling all the wires, removing pass fender, installing Oem tow hooks, the fuel filter housing, ord motor mounts, starter cable, a/c delete box, etc…

Those motor mount pics helped me, about to go and put new ones and crossmember on. Thanks
Cool! Don’t forget the Oem plate spacer that goes behind the mounts. Some look like a triangle and some like the ones I just installed are designed as a support bracket to brace a 700r4 transmission. Also helps to leave the bolts partly loose to help with the install. Once the motor is in, take the bolts out and put lock tight on them.

A few more pics of the AC delete. Fuel pressure, pyro and boost gauges installed. 150 watt 10 meter CB radio installed. Customer also wanted an alarm as well.

Going back to the C10… Motor is installed, pics of the boost and fuel lines for the gauges, passenger firewall painted and replaced a worn out washer fluid cap/motor.

Photos of the intake air filter set up I ordered. One is for summer and the other for winter. Spector filters have more layers of protection and filter much better then the K&N filters. That and cheaper.
