So I got a ride in a buddies Yota prerunner, coilovers up front somewhere in the 16-20 inches of travel range and the rear had deavers and 16 inches i think. really simple single shocks on each corner and super fun to jump around in etc..

I know a lot has to do with the fact that its very light and can get away with more. But it got me thinking why couldnt a K5 be built simply the same way?
I dont really think that using SFA is going to accomplish the results I would be after. Either A arm or I beam would possible yield the results.. Moreso A arm because that factory cross member can be had at any junkyard in usa.

I found some pictures of the use of a stock crossmember and lower arm mount with an upper arm mounted to the side of the frame (think bumpstop mount area) using ball joints and a 1/2 spindle nets 16 inches. Now that's with a ball joint.. A few years ago a buddy and I were going to build a prerunner out of a 2wd and just removing all the bumpstops and springs a completely stock 2wd suspension would cycle 12 inches cleanly..

So what do you guys think? bolt up 2wd cross member make longer arms, buy 3.0 kings dual rate.. deavers spring under in back with 3.0 smoothies.. I think it would be decent and fun enough to poke around jump and have a good time?? thoughts?

There are many out there like that. I don't have any links, but it has been done and works. The weight can actually be a plus through rough stuff. Long a rams with controled travel is the key up front. Leafs with quality bypasses controls the back well. The key is balancing weight, control and spring rates. I made 4wd work 10 years ago when Fox and King said it couldn't be done. Now look at KOH cars.

You are right but as you know there is a limit to what solid axle can do and take.. For example an aarm car gets wider and more stable as the suspension compresses an sfa rig doesn't change track width.. Anyway regardless this is more specifically just pure fun and nothing serious so if the main goal was jumping the truck what would you do?

I chose the sfa approach for the pure enjoyability of 4wd. Granted my track width won't change and I will only have 14 inches of travel in the front the coil overs should be able to handle it. I eventually might step up to by passes but not in the near future.

If you want a more versatile truck go 4wd.

If it were me and you are running around jumping stuff and able to keep momentum up in loose material. 2wd long arms front. Basically a tomed down trophy/trick truck.

My point was, good dampening is the key to whatever you build as a smooth riding rig. I built one suspension system on leafs all the way around. Just enough spring to hold the truck up with with 3" triple bypasses and 4" air bumps. 16" travel at all four corners. worked really well for what it was. Could he keep up with me? No. but not much else with leafs could keep up with him.

I have the other blazer for my 4wd which is why I don't really care.. Plus this is just a fun idea at this point

I am constantly designing stuff in my head.

Rightnight I am trying to figure out how to make a 67 to 72 1/2 ton short bed pickup lowered, on a arms, 4wd. Need it for putting my 68 flatbottom in the water.

I'm pretty anal about damping with my dirt bike so I'm sure some of that knowledge transfers between the two.

Ifs baby and torsion bars...or short coilovers

My problem is, and I create these issues myself, I need to be able to raise it up to get it on the semi. So air bags will be in the design. Right now I am looking at later model ifs with the air bags on top of the upper a-arm's.

I'll check when I get home and see if there is room for that.. Might not matter my 92 has a 4 inch lift.. Good idea or you could move the bags and use a cantilever so you have plenty of room and less load on the upper arms.

A budget friendly desert runner would be awesome like this! Now I need to find a truck

I have given some serious thought to installing a TTB type suspension. Steering can get tricky but a 241 from a later model truck will bolt into something with a 700 (4l60). ther trick here is I would just build my own beams if you cant do that it can get expensive. Also it would remain 4x4

I was just at the WERock races today. The course could have been done in a nicely built 2wd prerunner. Something to think about for next year.

Yeah most of the course. But the loose dirt on the uphill would be a stuggle. Alot of speed would be.needed

Ive also been thinking the same about 2wd or 4wd.

See out here, I think 2wd would only .be usful at the CORE desert races, CNS extreme trucks and the truck class with CHCA. And the random tough truck and monster truck shows.

Now a 4wd would.be good for all the above and more tooling around stuff. And maybe thought about entering the werock stuff before. Ideally, I want a mulit purpose rig I can race in most stock classes with maybe a shock change, ride height and tires for each. yet I dont want to build a 4400 rig.

Lol learned a lot since I made this thread..
So I’ve learned you can have just as much fun and go almost as fast as any 2wd normal guys can build and afford.. just need good controlled travel like @ktmoutfront said..
big shocks, decent wheel travel 13+ and go have fun and not sit around talking about how fun it would be to have fun..
