just got a new (ok reman) box the other day and noticed it does not have the nut to hold the pitman on. so here is my dumb question for today, can i use just any old nut/washer or do i need to find the correct one?
You should get a nut that is from a steering box, IIRC they are thinner than a regular nut of that size. It doesn't matter if it's a new or used nut but make sure you use lock-tite on the nut then torque to spec.
The nut isn't anything crazy, just hard to find from most fastener places. It's a 7/8" X 14 tpi jam nut. It's half the thickness of a normal nut the same size. I tried seven or eight local fastener places before I threw my hands up and went to GM. GM nicked me about $11 for the nut and washer...I definitely would have been better off going there in the first place.
