Looking to purchase a 2wd steering box for cross-over steering and I want to know if anyone recommends a specific vendor? Redhead and ORD are to expensive and I'm not going to have it modified for power assist so I'm not worried about that. From AutoZone to BAP and Ebay I've seen a wide range of prices and even some vendors that don't want a core charge. I want to make the most informed purchase I can with my cash. Appreciate your time and advice.

Rock Auto seems to have the best prices. PSC boxes are very very nice, but you pay for it. Red Heads are also nice, but the $300 core charge isn't. A reman 2wd seems to run about $200 give or take. Maybe try looking up a local spot that can rebuild and convert your 4x4 box. Could be cheaper than every other option and typically they would have some sort of warranty

Thank you I have not looked at Rock Auto. I know that the shaft can be swapped out I figured I would pay more in labor than just buying a rebuilt one and dropping it in. I will see if I have any shops in my area that can do it.
Thank you @jkroberts

Look at Howe Offroad

I have heard of a laundry list of issues with both Redhead and to a lesser extent PSC. I will say PSCs return and customer service was great, but felt like for the price it should have had no issues out of the box

As for the sector shaft swap, you would need to make sure the gear on the sector shaft is in good condition. If you import a shaft with some issues, or set it up wrong, you will like develop failures sooner

I have a rockauto 2wd box that’s been on both of my K10’s and it’s performed well. I would buy another as long as I wasn’t looking to add hydro assist at some point later.

I'm following i just took my k5 on its first drive yesterday and damn steering it is rough at a stand still. it does have a 4 inch lift and 35s i purchased it this way. not trying to steal your thread here but I'm semi new to 4 by's but will I have an issue if I'm running hydoboost and plan on doing a possible high steer and hydro steer ?

What year model did you purchase? I have a 91 K5 and from what I read I need a 78-87 box from a C10, or kseries. Cheapest I found with a $90 core charge is this one from Summit Racing for $110.

I run the earlier flared box and you’ll need the later O-ring box for a 91. I don’t recall the cutoff but I remember it was late 70’s so I think you’re correct on the 78 and up C10.

i always go 1985 . fairly rock solid year for o-ring stuff and lots of other parts . but before the 1987 rename mix up CRAP years .

RGR thank you. If you have a good box I'll buy one from you. I'm in Temecula southern California. Not sure of the shipping cost but might be worth it to you for cash in your pocket and room on shelves.
