3.07 Axles---can this be right?

Since we are talking about the subject of gearing. When I get say 4.10 gears, what does anyone think? I have the option for free of getting a 396 or 454. Anyone have any input as to what they may do? I am leaning toward the 396 myself

if you are referring to what performance gains you will get? it will accelerate much easier, less strain on the motor, less wear on the trans, from overworking it with the lugging froma stop on those 3.07's.

I am running a 350/700 and 4.10's and honestly i wish i had AT LEAST 4.56's and have been reading that alot of guys are really liking the 4.88's, some will say go further, but i like my highway driving :D

even with the 4.10's it still uch nicer than a 3.07 geard truck, but at highway speeds, it does tend to hunt between OD and 3rd on slight up hills or if i hit the throttle just at tad.

again, i personally wouldnt get anything less than 4.56's

Cool. Thanks. I know my buddy but 5.something gears in his 3/4ton axles and loves it. I am not worried about highway as this is just a weekend fun vehicle. Just for hitting the mountains. Not a daily driver. Got my car for that.

yes, but you have a 350 tranny with no overdrive, whereas 4xcrazy has the 700 with the .70 overdrive. 35 inch tires and 4.10 axle gears and 1:1 tranny and transfer case would yeild a rpm ratio of 2755 to do 70 miles per hour.

The weight is not 6200 lbs, the GVWR is.

That's the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. The curb weight of the truck was 4700 lbs, plus the 1500 lbs its rated to carry (since its a half ton) and you get the 6200 lbs.

In CO (and probably everywhere except CA) vehicles with a GVWR of 6000 lbs or more didn't need emissions equipment until '79 or so.

Ditto what is said above.

You other guys are getting GVWR (what is listed on the sticker) confused with curb weight. GVWR is the maximum weight the vehicle can carry once you put passengers and cargo in it, curb weight is the vehicle sitting with no passengers, cargo, or fluids. In that case, a GVWR of 6,200 lbs. is pretty light.

This is a good combo.

Ding! Ding! Winner!

Beat me to the GVWR punchline.

This information is correct, at least from the calculations I have done for my new to me 4.10 geared axles and 35's. You will have a lot higher RPM's at highway speeds than you do with the current 3.07 gears. I can run 75 on the freeway with my 3.08's and be turning around 2200 RPM's. I expect a major increase in RPM's, but I will be gaining the low end grunt that is severely lacking with the 3.08's.
