That's my question right now.

Also do you think my truck [350/sm465/35's] would be doable w/ 3.73 gears, or still a turd like it is now with 3.08s?

what he said.....

also, im running 3.73s with 38's but plan on running 4.56's with 42's. which is prolly about the same. i don't think it's that bad. 4LO has become my friend lately though. haha

Okay so If i find a K20 donor truck that's 8 lug it'll most likely be 10 bolt w/ 8 lug outers and 14b SF rear.

Will that 3/4 ton configuration still use 15" rims?
Will it be a bolt in swap to my '78 K10?

I can't comment on what the front would be as I only know 2wd (for now), but if the rear is a 14bsf it is also going to be 6 lugs. the 14bff was 8 lug.

In stock form, you can not use most 15" wheels on a stock 8 lug setup. you will need a minimum 16" wheel unless you do some shaving.

See that's what I thought.

I thought semi floaters were 6 lug but the people above say they're 8 lug.

wtf

Depends on years. If we're talking about 73-87, then 3/4 ton = 8 lug and 1/2 ton = 6 lug (4WD) or 5 lug (2WD.)

The 6lug 14bsf's are in newer trucks, i.e. post '88.

I drove to Moab last year on 3.73's with 35's ....... towing a pickup truck trailer from AZ ..... uphill ...... with gasp ...... a th700r4 and 305 motor :D

Doable , especially with the 4 speed manual tranny .

That said , I have 4.56 now , and I wouldn't go back if you threatened me with death :deal:

Alright well I'm going to be finding 73-87 axles so that'll be 8 lug.

As far as fitting 15" rims what's the determining factor, brake disc size or shoe size in the rear?

Could I put 1/2 ton brake setup on the 3/4s and still get away w/ 15" rims?

EDIT; with my 465 I hardly need so use the brakes to 1/2 ton brake setup would do me fine

Im running 3.73s with 40" boggers. It will still sh!t and git if you mash the pedal. Gotta love big blocks.

73-80, 3/4 tons 2 or 4wd, rear will be a full floater. 81 and newer depends on GVWR, but most of the 3/4s I've seen were semi's. All 1 tons are full floaters.
88-up trucks have some wierd things going on. I've seen a couple 1 tons with semi floaters. There are also heavy 1/2 ton, light 3/4 tons, heavy 3/4 tons. Can get confusing sometimes.

As for 15" rims on 8 lugs, depends on what axle and b/s of the rim. I have a set of 15x8s w/4.25" b/s. These would fit on my 97 HD with the pressed on drums no problems. But they wouldn't fit on my 89, which is a 1 ton, but the rear is out of a 3/4 ton, so it has the pull of drums, and it don't fit. I put some washers on it to see if it would clear. 4" would be fine. I also have a set of 15x12" with 3.25" b/s on my 1 ton axles. GM front brakes require grinding to fit, depending on b/s.....

+1 with b454rat, Chevy is weird at times, and everything he said is correct as far as I know. Now as for your gearing, all I can say is, Don't fear the gear!

Seriously, my Jeep has 4.10's, and is my wifes DD, and my Mustang and Blazer split duties about 70/30 in favor of the 'stang, which has 4.30's and 26 inch tall tires. The Blazer has 33'3 and 4:56's.

You hardly ever find people who regret gearing lower, unless the went with something goofy like 6.32's.
