3/4 Ton Swap is DONE: **d-shaft question**

Avery4jc said:
thanks for the opinions...like I said above its not going to be any time soon as there are other drivetrain mods I need to get done...BUT when the time does come where the BIG stuff is done I'll pick up a 14ff and start tinkerin' with it...could take a while but it won't matter b/c the truck will be running...:)

and in 10 years all those 14bff will be worth 1000$, and it will make a 60 look weak.

Go Avery

hey guys...I need to get my rear d-shaft taken care of next b/c its pulling the tailshaft out of the tc.
Do you think that I should have a shop cut and lengthen the one that I have (keeping the conversion joint)?
Or should I have a fresh one built from scratch so that its not only long enough but it'll also have the same size u-joint as the yoke on the 14ff? (1350?)

have one made that has the right joint on the end. that way if you ever break it you can get the joint easily. talk to a couple places before you have one made.

I had one made for the same setup. I took them the original from the truck and the one from the 3/4 donor truck. turns out I could have just brought them a measurement from yoke to yoke. I got a brand new shaft with new yokes and new u-joints installed, they even put the slip yoke on when I showed up to pick it up. $90(9 years ago). I tell everyone about them.

ok...I'll just have a new one made....I don't have the donor shaft so they are going to have to put new yokes along w/ the new tube.
I can bring them the one in the truck now so they can use the tail shaft...or will they have the parts to replace all of that too?

the more parts you bring them the cheaper it will be. look into getting a new slip yoke for your trans that is 1350. that would be tits. if you reuse the one you have you will either have 2 different size joints in the shaft or the conversion joint on the t-case end. Or find a 241(unless you already have one) and do a SYE and then have a shaft made.

I would just get the shaft lengthend. You already have the conversion u-joint and the yokes on your shaft so it will probably just be cheaper to legthen it anyway.

Just my 2 cents.

no I have a 208...that would be nice having a new tailshaft w/ the 1350...that way it'll be 1350s from the tc to the rear end.
I'll talk to them and see what they have at the driveline shop.

Anyone have some figures as far as whats reasonable?
1. Bring them my d-shaft, extend it and stick w/ my current u-joints
2. Bring them my d-shaft and have them reuse the tailshaft (different u-joints)
3. Get a 1350 tailshaft and have them make the rest from scratch

Just a rough idea of what I'm looking at price wise...I mean are we talking $100...or are we talking a couple hundred?

Just to lengthen the one you have now will cost you from $100-200. Having an all new one made up will cost around $400. Mine was almost $550 for a full custom CV shaft (just the rear), but that's on my K5 with a 12" lift, so the angles are much worse than your's. I'd just go with lenghtening your current shaft, especially if you don't have a lot of cash.

ok...I think I'll take my shaft in to be lengthened (and re-balanced I'd assume) and order a couple of the NAPA conversion joints...then just keep them w/ me if I go somewhere so if I break it I won't have any problems...

In case you missed this earlier. talk to the place who will make it before you do anything. Unless someone on here who actually makes shafts speaks up, that is your best course of action. There are shops who would rather weld tube to a new yoke then lathe off your old one. price at least 3 different places.

I sware i see an add every time in the back of fourwheeler magazine that says theyle build you a complete new driveshaft with cv for a blazer(would be the same basic thing on your pickup) for $250

I think your talking about driveshaft superstore. I have one of theirs. Worked out good so far. But I have heard bad things about the company on here and other forums.
