305 or 307

When I got my 81 Monte Carlo, it had a 2bbl 267 sbc, and a turbo 350c, with 2.29 to 1 rear end! HOT ROD!!! lol I then put a .060 over 350, and a 700R4 in front of the 2.29's!
Ohh man, 2.29 - that’s just not right !
The lowest numerical gear car I ever drove was a 81 Firebird 305 4Bbl TH350C with a 2.41 and ya damn near had to be in the secondary’s just to pull out into traffic - I can’t imagine a 2.29 !

The H.O.version 305 had a whopping 190 hp though.
I hate to admit this but the L-69’s were fun to drive with a 5-spd and 3.73 out back.
For 80’s era performance they made do fairly well.

My buddy had an H.O. 85 IROC and driving it around town was a blast.
Also the Monte Carlo SS’s could leave nice black marks on the road with the 3.73’s out back.

For all the shame we put on the 305’s they did make an effort with the L-69’s.

My truck came with a 305, the owner swapped in a th350 and it was a dog with 3.08 gears. Dad bought it for $500 and swapped in a crate 350 and a 700r4 and from 1991 and 2013 that was what it drove with.

I feel like I need to chime in hear given my username...

My K10 had a LU5 or LO5 in it when I bought it. (The 305 that originally had the crossfire injection from an 80s Monte Carlo) the previous owners put a factory aluminum intake and a holey carb. That with 3.08s and 35s was a total dog, but it made a lot of noise and it kept me from getting a lot more speeding tickets than I otherwise would have gotten back in highschool. It couldn't even do a burn out.
I built a 355 for it and sold the old 305 to another high school kid looking to rebuild it for his 3rd gen Camaro. I'm happy it got a new life for someone who was going to do the dumb stuff I did with it.

I sold the 350 out of my truck in 2010 or 11, I still have the guys phone number saved in my phone, I kind of want to ask him if I can buy it even though I’m sure it’s long gone

Reading some of the above comments reminded me of friend of mine that made very good use of his 305.
He was a senior in high school in 1988 and he bought a real clean 83 Z/28 ( after his gorgeous 1980 Z/28 got rear ended and totaled ) that came with the base LG4 305 and B/W T5 and an open rear 3.73.

His Dad owned the premier speed shop in town and had the best of connections so he talked him into finding a buyer for the low mileage 305 so he could put that money towards finishing a nice 350 he was building for the wrecked 80 Z/28.
A month later he was pulling the 305 and sold it and the ECM plus harness for $550 bucks that went towards go fast parts for his 350.

That 305 money got him a Crane Cams Saturday Night Special wiggle stick and Edlebrock intake , Holley 750 D/P ( all at store cost of course back in 1988 ) and some Heddmen Headers to wrap up the new 350. He also found some kind of deal on a takeout S-10 posi for the 7.5” rear end with what was left of the 305 money. It was the best use of a 305 that I had ever seen !

The 83 Z/28 ended up being one of the sweetest cars around and was damn quick for a street car with basic engine upgrades and the rest of the car bone stock.

The moral of this story is no engine is a complete waste - it can always be put towards better parts…assuming there is a buyer for it…

What's funny, is that when I bought the car, I thought " who would buy a car with that engine and gear combo?". That's when I found out that the base engine combo, was a 3.8 V6, and 2.14 gears!!!! My car was the "performance" combo!! What is also funny, was the fact that the $1100 350, and 700R4 was good for 16.1 sec 1/4 mile, through stock manifolds, single exhaust, stock convertor, and open 2.29 rear. Brand new, paper tag Mustang GT'S, with the 4.6 v8, and A/T, were running 16.3 sec 1/4! I had a grand total of $4000 in the car including buying it!

Well if you have both on hand and are going to send one to the machine shop here's what ya do. Yard the crankshaft out of the 305 and toss the rest in the scrap pile. Now take the guts out of the 307, keep the con rods and block and scrap the rest. Take it all down to the machine shop and have them bore it to 4" and balance the rotating assembly. You now have a standard bore 350.

Neither, why not use a 350?
