The Green Grendel

Care to share an eta?

It was 4* here yesterday. Forgot to plug my 6.5 in, but it didn't care. Fired right up.

D. All of the Above

Well, the package is supposed to be here tomorrow. I'm slightly skeptical, since the tracking number reports that it's currently in Maryland. :dunno:

Installing it hasn't been scheduled, but it will probably be within the next couple weeks, as I do want to see this thing run. Driving the hunk is a larger problem.

Here are the hurdles that I am aware of:

*no glow plugs (new development)
*driveshafts need 1 U-joint each.
*rear pinion yoke has a seized bolt (may rebuild the seal & bearing while I'm at it)
*need to set rear gears and seal up the axle
*need to install clutch, tranny, and t-case
*need to fab up adapter for the t-case cross member

These are needs (before I can test drive it)

But before I would consider it to be roadworthy it should also have:

front axle swap
dead HVAC blower needs to be fixed
tranny hump reinstalled (with new shifter holes)
shifter, shifter, shifter. I still don't have a shifter for this tranny. :doah:
install license plates (don't have a rear plate holder)
additional seating. I only have a driver's seat installed at this point. Has made the tranny work easier, but won't make driving it easier.
2 more tires. I have a set of bald 245/75R16 rollers, but I'm not sold on using them on the road. I have 2 285/75R16 tires that will fit nicely, but matching rubber would be a good thing to have.

What's with the front axle swap? Not going to just swap the outers?

Front axle is stock 3.08 gears, rear is 3.73 (truck came with a C30 axle in the rear, but without a matching front). So I hafta regear it anyway.

I ended up buying a complete 8-lug 3.73 axle off of @big dan. So I can kill both birds at the same time, without having to do an inner rebuild. His axle also came with an Eaton posi in it. Not something that I would have bothered buying outright, but probably not a bad thing to magically have. Combined with the rear Detroit, I should have 3.5 driving wheels when I'm done! (instead of 1 or 2 like my other rigs) :thumb:

Anyway, I'm having fun with this. :D

So...I also have a super secret idea. Wifey thinks it would be neat if, rather than use the stock NP208 shifting location (which is at least close to interfering with the NV4500 shifter), the transfer case shift lever was magically hooked up to the now-unused column shifter. That would free up a spot on the floor and involve some cool fab time, which is my goal for the project (I care much less about the final product as I do about the joy of building it). I also love having her involvement in these projects, so I would like to make her idea work if reasonable.

The linkage required to get from one side of the tranny to the other would be a headache, so I'm considering using a shifting cable for this purpose. I should just have to set my input and output link lengths and the cable should handle all the tricky geometry.

Has anyone done this or seen it done? Are there downsides that I'm failing to see? Anybody have recommendations for cable shifter setups that I should look into? Let the ideas flow... :thumb:

Sounds like a nightmare.

Martin

I agree. I think if you did that cables would be the way to go.

Every linkage joint is another opportunity for binding or misalignment. Cables would be less of a nightmare.

Linkages sure would be. But I was thinking that using a shifting cable would minimize the number of nightmares. Is that still a headache?

It sounds like I hafta rework the stock shifting linkage if I wanna use it with the NV4500 anyway. I thought it would be easier to adapt a cable to my existing shifter than it would be to start modding the linkage to make it fit in a new spot. And then making a new mounting spot. :dunno:

I don't actually like how much floor space the stock NP208 shifter/bezel assembly consumes. I think there is much room for improvement.

I like it. You wouldn't even need to do any fabbing in the cab. Just secure the cable housing to the firewall, and use the stock mechanical shifter mechanism that normally moves the shaft to engage the auto trans...

If you did it clean it would be pretty trick imo.
That would be a really long cable though.

I would also like to move mine, because I want to make a desert style center console that would go all the way up to the dash. But then I cant shift the tcase... But I would like one on the console I will build.

Lokar has a cool column cable shifter for our trucks. I had one in mine that worked good.

And nice find on the axle! That's a win all the way around.

I've got a center console design using the power of ratios to put my shifters in a better spot and shorten the throw.

I will agree with Adam it would be pretty trick if you pulled it off

Yeah, I was picturing it as being less work than moving the T-case lever. And moving the lever would be the normal (boring) thing to do. If I can pull this off as easily as I think I can, why wouldn't I? If I can't easily get a cable long enough to do it, I can use the old tranny shifting linkage that attaches to the driver-side frame rail. That cuts my distance by about a third.

Cool. Have fun with the fabbing. For me, the fab work is the entire reason why I own the trucks. That's where the fun is at.

Also, you've forgotten the most important part.

A very, very pretty girl has asked for this feature. She doesn't ask for much, and this seems pretty doable. So I have no reason to give up before at least trying to bring some smiles to her face. :deal:

It won't be a big deal if it doesn't work out. But it will be a big deal if it does. :saweet:

You can use the Lokar kit with an extended cable. I do believe someone sells cables in requested lengths.

I think so, too. He's switching to a D60 with gears that don't start with "3." I'm aiming for 3.73 gears with da diesel (don't like winding it up too high). So I bought what he didn't want and he bought what I didn't want. "Used in dang good condition" was his claim. We'll see what I find when I get it installed and start spinning it, but it looks nice from the outside. I could definitely have sourced a cheaper axle locally, but this one has several shiny parts, and the posi unit is icing on the cake (I probably would not have ever gotten around to locking my front axle). And it came with 2 lifetimes' worth of extra lockouts. :haha:

So I'm happy. Assuming I don't find some hideous deception inside. I haven't actually opened it up yet, it's just sitting and waiting for its chance to shine. :)
