Having a 4 bolt main is pretty much a gamble. Corvettes were almost all 4 bolt main and lot of trucks were also but still could be either and no definitive way to tell what did or didn't come with them.
I'm thinking about rebuilding my motor. It has 140K on it and has been sitting for 5 yrs. If I do I'm going to try and add a lot more horse power to it. I would like the low end to be built strong.
well a splayed 4 bolt is the strongest, some say a studded 2 bolt will go 7500 and stay put with the right studs/rods/bolts. Some say the factory 4 bolt is weaker because the holes are all parallel.
Unless you are going with a turbo or super charger a 4 bolt block isn't needed. I used to run a 2 bolt block in a 66 Nova and spin that engine to 8K all day long and never had any issues. Just make sure you use good quality fasteners (ARP). I would use studs in the mains and either ARP bolts in your stock rods or if you're going to buy aftermarket rods then i would go for a rod with the ARP cap screws over a bolt/nut style rod.
