350 block year difference

any difference between a 69-79 chevy 350 and an 86 350? can 86 parts be bolted to the 69-79 block? any problems i may have switching over everthing.
 
Somewhere along the line the dipstick was moved from the drivers to pass side 80 IIRC. In 86 it went to a one piece rear main seal.
 
The dipstick switch occured after 80, possibly with the redesigned body in 81, but my 80 is still on the drivers side.
 
One piece rear main motors take a different flywheel. Trans and accessories will bolt up otherwise.

Wish you were closer, I'd trade you flywheels. :)
 
86 up blocks went to a one piece rear main and yes the dipstick changed sides. The heads and intakes and every thing else will bolt up. The only ones you have to watch for is when you have vortech heads you have to use the vortech style intake cause the intake on old school had like 73 degree holes for the center bolts and the vortech intakes have 90 degree center holes.
 
The oil pans are different as well and not just because of the dipstick location.

oh dang glad you said that i was just fixn to get mine machined guess there aint any point in that if it wont work. any idea what a new flywheel cost nowadays
 
Nope. I think there is a post on here not that old mentioning new flywheel cost. All of mine came from trucks people were parting out, came with the transmissions. $25 to machine them. (edit: local to me:))

Cost to machine the flywheel is going to be dependant of your location. Here in the S/F bay area of California you'll spend $35.00 for that flywheel to be machined.

little better getting a centerforce clutch w/ the centrifical weight ..faster the motor turns harder it grips because its slinging the weights outward..i used the 60% centerforce w/RAM button ceramic brass clutch and you couldn't make it slip, the clutch was either pulling or it wasn't,literally no smooth takeoffs, it was let out it went
 
69 - 73 heads had soft valve seats because gas contained lead ( tetraethyl lead ) which increased octane and prevented exhaust valve recession ( wore out the valve seat ). In 74 - present all GM heads used hardened valve seats, the heads could now handle unleaded gas.
 
I would stay away from the center force clutch. The reason is that yes the faster you spin the engine the weights travel and add more pressure to the clutch which also pushes the crank forward and wipes out the thrust bearing in the engine.
 
they're clamping so tight they push the cam forward?..i knew they gripped, but never wouldv'e thought the pressure plate would push so hard that it mess w/cam...would a button stop this?

It pushes the CRANK forward not the cam.
 
ooooo...wears the thrust bearing then,huh. so the centerforce pressure plate can cause premature engine slop/death?

Yes sir, seen it many times. When i find a bad thrust bearing i need to know what caused it so i start asking questions and usually it is either a bad torque convertor or the use of a center force clutch.
